Meet Lucy, the World’s Smallest Working Dog!

Lucy, an adopted Yorkshire Terrier, was named the world's smallest working dog by the Guinness Book of World Records!

She’s a tiny dog with a BIG honor!

Lucy, a three-year-old mini Yorkshire Terrier from New Jersey that stands at 5.7 inches tall and weighs a mere 2.5 pounds, has been awarded the title of world’s smallest working dog by the Guinness Book of World Records—edging out the former record holder, a 6.6 pound police dog from Japan.

Working as a therapy dog with the Leashes of Love program, Lucy visits hospitals, assisted living facilities, special needs schools and correctional facilities bringing joy and compassion to the less fortunate.

Lucy’s owner, Sally Leone Montufar, couldn’t be prouder of her petite pup especially since three years ago, Lucy was about to become homeless. Montufar recalls the day when she first met Lucy while working at the pet boutique Paw Dazzle in 2009. Lucy’s previous owner walked into the boutique and said she was soon leaving to take her mini Yorkie to the shelter.

“I couldn’t let her leave—she was going to the shelter and I didn’t want to see that happen,” Montufar said in an interview with NBC Philadelphia. So, Montufar decided to give the cutie a home.

After nursing Lucy back to health, as Montufar told CourierPostOnline.com that Lucy was rather lethargic when she was first adopted, Montufar began training Lucy to do therapy work.

Wearing sweaters, bonnets and dresses—Lucy simply adds to her adorable and social nature becoming one of the favorites amongst those she visits.

Still, Montufar does worry about Lucy’s fame coming at the expense of Momo, the 6.6 pound Japanese search and rescue dog.  Although Momo’s job is certainly more dangerous than Lucy’s, it does not discredit the importance of Lucy's work.

She is a small dog making a huge impact on the lives of others.

Awww...she's just adorable! I was reading about her in the Dog Whisperer magazine. My sister got me a subscription for Christmas. I have a Yorkie mix and there is a toy Yorkie down the street from us and further down the street there are a lot of Yorkies and other small dogs living as well. I love Yorkies. I'm so happy to see this on little Lucy! Thank you for sharing!

Please explain just WHY a rescue dog HAS to be sick. The article says lethargic, that's NOT sick. And - that's totally normal when an animal has been sold/given to a new owner. There's a little bit of grieving for their last owner. GEEEZE!!!!!

jeh: This made me cry! She is adorable and reminded me of my Yorkie who weighed 3 1/2 lbs. I had to put her to sleep in 2010 and still miss her terribly! I wonder why she was headed for a shelter.

Lucy is adorable. I also have a mini yorkie. He weights 4#'s. I have thought about makeing him a theraphy pup, but didn't want to go thru all the certification. Billy is also very social with people, but goes after kitty's and big dogs. Give her a little kiss from me and my Billy. Jan W.
