David Dastmalchian Adopts Cat From The Suicide Squad’s Set – Giving The Cat Her Own Polka Dot Suit

With The Suicide Squad hitting theatres in recent weeks, it’ll come as no surprise to find that thousands of us have fallen in love. Not with the main stars – as lovable as they might be (for psychopaths and bad guys) – but with the cute critters who made their way onto the silver screen.

From Ratcatcher 2’s ratty pal Sebastian, with his animal magnetism, through to King Shark (hey, we’re counting him as both a pet and as a main character). It’s fair to say that Suicide Squad brought on a plethora of pets that we could fall head-over-heels over, whether that be by design, or not.

However, one animal had a major effect behind the scenes, on David Dastmalchian. During production, he met and adopted a cat in Panama. Which he then promptly named Abner Bubblegum Polka Dot Cat — or “Bubblegum” for short.

Of course, like all cat owners, he couldn’t help but take to Instagram to show off his new pet pal. Stating that he was able to bring Bubblegum back “with the help of my @thesuicidesquad family & some generous animal lovers.”

He credits the cat with helping him and his family navigate the trying mental times of the pandemic.

Known in the film for playing the Polka Dot man, he was able to fulfil a lifelong dream of working with classic makeup-effects.

“Going back to my lifelong passion for horror, I always wanted to be Lon Chaney. Since I was a kid, I wanted to do that kind of work,” Dastmalchian revealed to Looper in an exclusive interview. “When I went to work on this movie, I found out Legacy Effects was the company that was going to do the makeup for the polka dots, and they applied it every day. One of them is my dear friend Greg Funk, who, if you saw the “Ant-Man” movies and you remember all the tattoos that my character had, Greg was my makeup artist and did all my tattoos. So then, getting to be with Greg and have him do these incredible prosthetics — and Greg is a legend in makeup — was such a treat. Also, a new friend, my buddy Matt [Sprunger], who was Greg’s partner in applying my makeup, helped out.”

But the story gets better, since David was able to provide his newfound feline friend with their own Polka Dot suit. Made, of course, by The Suicide Squad’s Oscar-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky.

Meticulously planned, the cat cosplay has wowed fans and cat lovers alike, thanks to its extraordinary detail. Of course, the cat looks a complete natural in their newfound pet passion – making us wonder whether they’ll be staring alongside their owner in the next Suicide Squad film!

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad stars Dastmalchian as the unlikely superhero Polka-Dot Man, as well as Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, all of whom reprise their roles from the first Suicide Squad movie. Newcomers to the cast include John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark, Peter Capaldi as the Thinker, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Michael Rooker as Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Richard “Dick” Hertz/Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Flula Borg as Javelin, Sean Gunn as Weasel, and Mayling Ng as Mongal.
