Sleeping With Your Dog - Cheri
Sleeping With Your Dog - Cheri's Answer
Q: Where is the most appropriate place for a dog to sleep within the home? If the pet owner wants them to sleep in bed with them, is that healthy?
I recommend keeping the dog in a crate for at least the first few nights so that they can get used to their surrounding while still maintaining boundaries. Sleeping has a lot to do with physical positioning, which is huge in forming dog's behavior. Whenever I give a consultation to one of my clients, I am always standing when I meet their dog because your body language becomes an important factor in how they view you. One of the first things I tell my clients to do when their dog is having behavior problems, is to get them off the bed and back to sleeping in their crate.
Your bed is your throne. After the first few nights, when the dog has fully learned the rules of the house, you may invite him to sleep in your bed. It is for you to decide where on the bed your dog sleeps so that he knows his place and doesn't try to takeover. He should not be able to choose the spot on his own. But having your dog sleep in bed with you is perfectly healthy. It's natural for dogs to sleep with other members of the pack and it's actually a great way for you to bond with your animal. With that said, sweet dreams!
