Petside's Top Ten Travel Hints and Tips
You want your vacation to be about the adventure -- not the planning! To help make your trip stress free, Petside.com compiled some helpful hints and tips for your next pet-friendly vacation.
1. All pets should have tags on their collar with current information including owner's name, address and a phone number, cell and/or home, where they can be contacted. Current microchips can also be helpful, but many people may not know your pet has a microchip, or they many not want to take your pet to a vet with a reader to find out. Therefore pet tags are a great way to go.
2. If your pet does get lost you should have a current picture of him. Having a recent photo will make it easier for people to search for him.
3. You should always bring your pet's medical record regardless of where or how you travel. Current medical information may be necessary if your pet gets injured or sick and needs emergency veterinarian care by someone other than his regular veterinarian.
4. Once you've picked your vacation destination, search for local veterinary hospitals in the area and compile a list including addresses and phone numbers.
5. In addition to medical records, make sure to pack enough food and water for traveling and for the duration of your stay. For long distance car rides, make scheduled stops for pets to drink water, relieve themselves and get a little exercise.
6. Many companies make pet-friendly travel products -- such as fold up bowls and beds -- which can make your packing easier. Check out Petside.com's suggested travel products.
7. When traveling in a car always make sure to have your pet secured either in a doggie seat belt or crate.
8. Bring a first aid kit for pets. Pets can get into accidents both indoors and out so always be prepared.
9. For pets who tend to be nervous traveling, bring along their favorite toys or bed so they feel more at ease.
10. Major airlines now recognize the four-legged traveler. United Airlines has introduced the PetClass Program for Mileage Plus members. Members can earn 1,200 bonus miles when traveling with their pet.
Note: Many airlines allow pets to travel as carry on's, cargo or checked baggage, but all must be crated in an approved pet kennel carrier. Check each airline for rules, restrictions and programs
