AP-Petside Poll: How Safe are America's Pets?
A new AP-Petside.com poll reveals some surprising insights into just how safe America's pets are today. Pet owners nationwide were asked about the pet safety routines in their homes, and the results are alarming.
41 percent of pet owners reported that they have experienced at least one pet safety emergency that required an emergency trip to a vet. These emergencies included their pet being bit or attacked by another animal (17%), having an allergic reaction (16%) or eating something poisonous (7%).
(See a list of the most common household pet poisons)
11 percent of owners reported that their pet has been hit by a car, which is the most common way pets break bones. 9 percent admit their pet has attacked or bit another animal, and 5 percent say their pet has attacked or bit a person.
With the Holiday season quickly approaching, 59 percent of owners say pets are only a minor consideration when picking out Holiday decorations. Even though 14 percent reported that their pets have gotten into the decorations before.
(Learn how to pet-proof your Holiday decorations)
The survey revealed that pet owners have some dangerous habits that can lead to pet accidents and injuries. A quarter of pet owners give their pets bones from table scraps, which can lead to choking or the bones splintering in pets' throats or stomachs. 62 percent of dog owners and 33 percent of cat owners let their pets ride in their cars unrestrained, rather than placing them in a pet carrier. And 15 percent of dog owners and 7 percent of cat owners say they've left their pets alone in a car or truck.
Though safety emergencies appear to be common, the majority of pet owners are not prepared. 54 percent do not have a fire evacuation plan that includes their pets and only 20 percent have a pet first aid kit. And even after Hurricane Katrina, when we saw pets stranded in the floor waters, 53 percent of owners do not have a natural disaster evacuation plan for their pets.
(Guides for pets in natural disasters and fire plans with pets in mind)
However, most pet owners (63% of dog owners and 53% of cat owners) say they would be at least somewhat likely to perform pet CPR to save their pet's life. Women were more likely to say they would than men (65% vs. 50%).

Folks they are just dogs and cats and there a millions of them everwhere, folks tend to forget they are just that and not there human offsprings. U have to remember it is just a dog and it isn't human.
adoptadog October 21, 2009 9:20 AM
People who are not animal lovers will always have the same comment as Bob Naeger. They are just Dogs and cats, millions of them....
The fact remains that millions and millions of people do not share that opinion. Animals endure the same pain and emotions as people. We are outraged when a child is abandoned or put outside with no water of food but for a dog who can't speak for themselves it is ok? Or maybe a 50.00 fine.
It is comments like that the reinforce my belief that I like Dogs more than most heartless humans. After my dad died someone spoke at his funeral. He said "you can always judge a person on how he treats an animal" . Enough said.
Amazed October 21, 2009 9:48 AM
Wow, what a jackass comment from Bob. The world would be a better place if we had more people who cared for pets and fewer Bobs. It would be nice if he would learn to spell as well.
Jamie October 21, 2009 10:06 AM
I have done CPR on my cat, Billy. We went to a vet we didn't know well for an emergency because Billy had a blocked urethra, and the vet over-sedated him. Billy couldn't breathe on his own for about 10 minutes, and the vet wasn't willing to do anything about it. I did rescue breathing for him during that time, and it saved his life. Cat snout tastes awful, but Billy was my baby. I had him for 19.5 years before he finally left me. I'd do it again for any of my animals.
Ken October 21, 2009 10:20 AM
I agree with bob. No animals do not endure the same pain and emotions as people adopt. They lack that part of the brain. They do not retain emotion or hold grudges. You can spank a dog and 5 min later it is back in your face licking you. They only have instinct. Which is often mistaken as "feelings". People buy filtered water for their pets, simple fact is they frink the water and lick thier butts, real smart. I love animals and take mine to the vet when it needs it, but once again, its not a human, only a pet.
This poll is so sided its not funny. Like putting a poll on the NRA website asking if guns should be banned... come on.
Oh, and way to go amazed for pointing out Bob cant spell, really on topic.
adoptadog October 21, 2009 10:21 AM
I recently donated a pet rescue mask kit to my local fire department. They were very happy to get it and with budget restrictions they cannot buy them. I paid 80 dollars for the set and had it delivered right to their door. It is a small price to pay. Call your local fire chief and see if they need one. Just do it.
adoptadog October 21, 2009 10:30 AM
Ken, You need to study up on animal anatomy. They do feel pain and they do remember. My Lab remembers the day some moron shot him with a shotgun and was scared to death of loud bangs for the rest of his life. I feel bad for your dog. He deserves better than you!
Amazed October 21, 2009 10:35 AM
Interesting how a pet CPR article brings out the sadists like Ken who "spank" their pets.
Ken October 21, 2009 10:38 AM
Once again thats instict. What creature isnt scared to death of loud bangs? If something gets hurt, it will remember not to do it. Thats not an emotion. And way to go by being professional with the personal insults again. And i know more about mammals anantomy than you, im certain. So stop reflecting the topic with personal insults.
Ken October 21, 2009 10:41 AM
sure do, spank my child too. oh wait, its ok to spank your child in disipline just not an animal? Or do you believe that that is wrong to? Perhaps that is your problem. And you get a cookie to for reflecting the topic with insults.
adoptadog October 21, 2009 10:43 AM
Ken, when you spank your dog and it yelps, that means it hurts.
You must be a bunch of fun at a party. Does the average housewife feel no pain too?
2063scott October 21, 2009 10:46 AM
I live in a house full of dog & cat lovers They teach you how to be a good person and they are allways there for you .It is just like a child If you make that choice to have a pet you owe it the same respect you give a person. After all you chose them they didnt chose you .
Amazed October 21, 2009 10:57 AM
Also interesting how sadists like Ken not only defend their right to "spank" their pets but now he likes to add that he is so abusive the dog "yelps" This article has truly brought out the dregs of our society. The reference to the housewife concerns me that Ken may not limit his abuse to dogs.
FirstAid4Paws October 21, 2009 10:57 AM
It is great to see an article like this. As a pet first aid instructor I know first hand that many owners are unprepared.
There is no 911 system for pets, if something happens, the owner is all that the pet has. Did you know that according to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) 1 out of 4 more pets could be saved if just one pet first aid technique was applied prior to getting Veterinary treatment?
If you love your pets seek out a class: pettech.net, your local red cross, firstaid4paws.com
Ken October 21, 2009 10:59 AM
Haha, how did "housewife" get into this, so random? And you are supporting my statements, something that is medically emotionless can still feel pain. Alexithymia patients still show pain, trust me. that's nerves signaling the brain. A different cognitive process entirely.
and yes i am fun at a party... and enjoy long walks on a beach if you would like to know. I cant even comprhend your logic with the hosewife comment...
Done with the childish games. Hopefully people can be more professinal than you, like scott.
I can respect other peoples veiws, perhaps you should. I do not believe in hurtng an animal and anybody who does on purpose should be punished. And before you go out on the limb with that statement, spanking my dog Sierra in disipline when she was a pup isnt abuse or hurting it in any way. Good day all :)
Syd October 21, 2009 11:11 AM
There have been studies to show that dogs do indeed have emotions! AND they "smile"! Dogs can understand a human vocabulary of around 150 words. Dogs show empathy and concern, as well as mourning.
Syd October 21, 2009 11:14 AM
As a preschool teacher, I also find it interesting that you believe that "spanking" is discipline. There are better, more positive ways for both children and pets.
Dana October 21, 2009 11:14 AM
I can say they definitely DO remember wrong being done to them..i have a little dog who was beat by a man before i adopted her and she is still scared of men. she belly crawls to them. If you ddont like animals, thats fine but there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with loving an animal. if youre goingto have anything, yuo need to love it according to my grandad and hes right. My dog IS like my child and i love her like one.
adoptadog October 21, 2009 11:24 AM
Ken, thank you for informing me that I am uneducated and know less than you. In this case I feel honored not to be smart as you. For the record my dog was not gunshy before he was shot. My dogs do show emotion. I must be special. Thanks for the cookie.
xina October 21, 2009 11:33 AM
I find it disgusting that humans who think animals just run on instinct, exist. Animals have the same emotional intelligence as young children who cannot yet speak. Crying as a result of pain or sadness or shivering as a result of fear. Those are real basic emotions which humans and animals share alike. And "Adoptadog", I know exactly why you added the housewife comment. It is not so random and off-topic at all.
Another concern of mine is, if most of you agree (in general) that animals share the same emotions and experience the same pain, then are any of you animal "lovers", vegetarians? Which do you pet and which do you eat? Why?
Cindy Khan - Reno October 21, 2009 11:47 AM
My daughter did mouth to mouth on a baby tree squirrel about 6 months ago. Out Cat brought us the "present" and dropped its lifeless body on the patio. Today she is full grown and lives in the rocks near by and we feed her fruit and peanuts everyday. We call her fuzzy. She'll take a snack right out of our hands.
ShugasMom October 21, 2009 11:51 AM
Odd how a simple article brought out such crap.
adoptadog October 21, 2009 12:06 PM
Yup, ShugasMom, wind em up and watch em run.
Thanks xina, people who hurt animals have no problem hurting people too. A lot of lowlifes out there.
Mud Mamzerman October 21, 2009 12:12 PM
I'd take my dog over Bob any day. There are millions of thoughtless jerks like him.
Pocket JJ Sux October 21, 2009 12:14 PM
As a 44 year old person who has had pets for as long as I can remember, from Horses, Dogs, Birds and even a goat, they are memebers of the family. We they hurt, we hurt!!! When the die, we cry!!! "You can always judge a person on how he treats an animal", what a great statement.
Meemaw October 21, 2009 12:26 PM
What a dumbass comment that is that pets don't suffer the same pain as humans. That is probably the stupidest comment I have ever heard in my 72 years of life. We have an 11 year old dog who has multiple physical problems and tho we are on a fixed income & retired we have lived frugally so that we could provide her with the best of health care. We have spent $35,000 on her which means I will be driving my 12 year old car for the rest of my life but what she has given us in return is priceless!!!
Amazed October 21, 2009 1:19 PM
When I was a child, I witnessed a hunter abuse a bird dog. The dog didn't go fetch the bird like he was supposed to and the hunter grabbed the dog and threw it to the ground then put his knee in the dog's throat and proceeded to choke the dog. I have never heard such screams from an animal. As a child, I was powerless to stop the abuse. I know now that what I witnessed was felony dog abuse. I have no use for people like "Ken" who get their jollies making dogs "yelp".
peter October 21, 2009 1:26 PM
To all the pin heads like Bob. Read, "When Elephants Weep." No, animals do not have human emotions they have animal emotions, and dogs and cats are totally dependent on people. We have made them that way with our selective breeding. People are "animals" do we only have instincts?
The Big Kahuna October 21, 2009 1:34 PM
When our Golden was 6 months old he was knocked out cold by an overly aggressive dog that was loosely controlled by a neighbors child. My 7 yo son ran 100 meters around the soccer field to get my attention, and I ran over to find our puppy lying on the ground, unconscious and not breathing. Instinctively I took his muzzle in my hand and started rescue breathing into his snout. After about three strong puffs he caught his breath and slowly came around. It was scary when it happened, but the rescue breathing really worked.
edna October 21, 2009 2:57 PM
It really saddens me to read some of the above. Animals are much nicer than most humans. They appreciate what is done for them, they are loyal, and they feel pain and fear the same as humans. How can a human hurt an animal, however, look at all those that do. It is a proven fack that those are the people who would also think nothing of killing or hurting another human both physically and mentally. Watch out for them.
Evie Glodic October 21, 2009 3:00 PM
If you want to be a dog or any kind of responsible pet owner then you need to know how to take care of your pet in difficult situations such as fire, floods & other natural disasters + you need to learn how to take care of them just for routine times when you are not with them such as when you're working or out of the home. There are courses that local animal shelters can give you or you can just ask you veteriarian what precaustions to take to any emergancies such as having bottled water, food & bedding always available in a 1 or 2 day supply for both YOU & your 4 legged friends.

i had to give mouth to mouth on my parrot when she fell in the pool and her lungs filled w/water...so scared i wasn't doing it right.took her to the vet asap and they had her on oxygen.i guess it worked cause my heart would have broke if i had lost her.
jmuhj October 21, 2009 4:10 PM
Bob and Ken. You obviously have never loved a member of another species. If you ever allowed yourselves to throw out the antiquated and incorrect perceptions you may have been raised with, and get to know a cat or other "animal" (we are animals, too, don't forget, and we are mammals, just like cats, dogs, and many other animals humans love) you would discover not only that they have deep emotions and form deep bonds, but that they are indeed sentient (feeling) beings. Cats are in fact far more sentient than humans. When a cat loves a human, it is for real and because the human has earned the love, not because of dominance or the need to follow someone, as is the case with dogs. Regardless, Bob and Ken, I pray that someday you WILL allow yourself the true and unconditional love and loyalty that only a bond with an "animal" of another species can ever give. You would be amazed. And you will be much, much happier for it. I guarantee that.

I revived my dear Gizmo twice with CPR. Not an easy task but well worth it. I tried it on another dog and it didn't work. Gizmo had heart problems. She lived to be 20.5 years old and the best companion I've ever had.
Bob and Ken have no business owning animals of any kind.
LindaB October 21, 2009 4:47 PM
I, myself have more love and compassion for dogs than I do for humans.Animals love us UNCONDITIONALLY.Of course I would give my dog CPR...with no hesitation.Bob...you are one of the humans I care less about than my dog.
KinKStar October 21, 2009 4:48 PM
They might in fact 'just be dogs or cats' BUT they are animals brought into our family, with emotions invested, so it's MORE than 'just' which is an insult to anyone who has had a pet and lost it. Pity the fools!
Linda B October 21, 2009 4:52 PM
Bob, you should NEVER own or take care of any animal...you lack the ability to love, judgeing by your heartless statement.
Animal lover October 21, 2009 7:13 PM
Anyone that thinks like Bob and Ken shouldn't own animals. And Ken, although some would take the high road and not stoop to your level, I will for the moment. Give your dog to someone who will take care of it and love it. Something you are evidently incapable of doing.
DianaK October 21, 2009 7:34 PM
if you J.A.'S want to treat animals like dirt you shouldn't have them. I have had dogs all my life, and they've been there for me when my own family hasn't people who abuse any animal should be horse whipped or worse. Pets can sense at times when somethings wrong or if you're just sad. If you know who this Ken is turn his ass in to ASPCA remember Ken and Bob what goes around comes around and I hope you both get your just rewards!!
DianaK October 21, 2009 7:46 PM
Ken I feel sorry for your family and your dog. I was a victim of physical abuse and like I said previously well he got his just reward, he's dead now he wound up homeless and died on the streets, anyone who abuses anyone or animals should have the same thing done to them only a hell of alot worse You're a poor excuse for a human being
Alica October 22, 2009 1:17 AM
Hey Bob and Ken... I think the world would be MUCH MUCH better without you. I also pity your poor animals.
sally October 22, 2009 3:52 AM
I totally agree with you adoptadog . I would perform CPR on my pets if I had too !!I just only hope that I could save them .Thank you for being who you are .
Anyone who disagrees should not be on this forum... go back to your LITTLE world where you think you are superior ... which by the way .. you are not.
If you have ever owned a pet you will know that they are far more sensitive and intelligent that we can ever hope to be. An " animal " as they call them are more tuned in to things than we are .That's why it is called UNCONDITIONAL LOVE .I feel sorry for those who are not there yet .
sally October 22, 2009 3:59 AM
Ken ... I think that you are a very lonely person who is also bitter for whatever happened in your life .
You should not take it out on poor defenseless animals as .. I believe it will come back to haunt you .
Let this be a warning a to what will come your way if you don't mend your ways .Take heed !!!!

Bob must be a very sad and lonely person. They are part of our family, they are our kids who give you love and compassion not like some humans. Get a life Bob!!
peter October 22, 2009 4:49 PM
i think dogs do have enmotions when we separte our dogs they go nuts and cry as to why we got a puppy cause we knew our other dog was gonna be passing. im glad we did it hepled our dog so much she never cried when he did die, i know this cause we are fostering a dog that looks just like him and she licked this dog and ran around it all night it was here like her long best friend was back. i would do anyhting for my dogs just like own kids i would do anything for them
Mike October 23, 2009 8:48 AM
Interesting!
Deb October 23, 2009 3:16 PM
Serial killers hurt and kill animals, makes you wonder about Ken and Bob! It doesn't matter what we say, it will not effect them one way or the other, they are sick, and need help. Let's all just stop responding to their ignorance, they love that. Thank you to all you animal lovers out there!!!!
Daniela Caride October 24, 2009 2:47 PM
I highly recommend pet owners to enroll in a first aid course from American Red Cross. Most first aid courses will only teach you how to identify an emergency, but won't teach you what to do. Acting properly and fast during an emergency might save your pet's life.

I can not believe how people miss treat animals. They do have emotions, and can feel pain. They are helpless and rely on us for all of their needs. They bring such joy. People that abuse animals should endure the same treatment that they put the animals through. Then...maybe they would think before they do it. I can not believe what Amazed had to witness as a child. If I saw anything like that happen...God help them because I would do anything to defend that poor animal.
yomama October 27, 2009 1:14 AM
Several years ago, I read an article about a medical student who found his dog down. He performed mouth to muzzle rescue breathing. Unfortunately, he wasn't aware that his dog had been poisoned, he injested some of the poison in the process, and both died. Know what you are doing, before you lose not only your pet, but your own life.
Chrissy October 27, 2009 4:00 PM
I'm cert. in Pet First Aid & C.P.R. I would help & animal in anyway I could. I saved a dog that had been hit by a car. The dog ran & got into a swamp. The Police told me not to go in, But I did,& I saved that little Beagle. & she lived. I feel so good about that day. I just wish I could have caught the jerk that hit her. I'm Retired Police Officer. I now train dogs.
Nancy November 1, 2009 3:22 PM
Give me a break! Who cares how safe stupid animals are, what about how safe are America's CHILDREN?? In case you hadn't noticed, there's been a rash of child abductions. Or have we aleady forgotten about the girl in Florida, found murdered in a landfill??
Nancy November 1, 2009 3:26 PM
Hey Lori, are you a vegetarian? I hope so, if you're so concerned that animals feel pain and emotions. What about the poor pigs, cows, and chickens killed by the millions??
Dennis November 1, 2009 4:14 PM
Bob Naeger is right, they're just cats and dogs. I've had cats and dogs and horses and rabbits as pets, and never saw them as anything other than what they were: Animals called "pets". Almost any animal has been dubbed a"pet" at some point, even lizards, spiders, guppies. etc. They're not human beings with tails. Get a GRIP people!
Lisa D November 1, 2009 4:17 PM
Why does the Associated Press have this ridiculous site anyway? Pets are too trivial to be on the radar of a news wire service.
Dennis November 1, 2009 4:20 PM
Trivial is right. And I'm so sick of hearing the over-used lame cliche about pets giving "uncondtional love". The animal is after your FOOD, you pet kooks. They see you as a walking can opener! Stop flattering yourselves that they love you!! What a joke.

I am 71 years old, with 2 mini-schnauzers. This past 7 months has been hard for me as Prince and Tinymite are turning aggressive to all other dogs. The family has 12 dogs in 4 households, of which 3 live very close. As a female living on a small Social Security income, I can not afford to pay for obedience classes. Is there a trainer out there that can help me. The dogs are, next door 2 English Bulls and a Yorkshire Terrior. Other side of me is a Jack Russel/Dachsaund mix, Chinese Pud and Weimeraner. My house has 2 Mini-Schnauzers and 1 Teacup Chichauhua. All the dogs range form 9 weeks to 3 years. Mine are the most aggressive to all the others. I really do need the help or I will be forced to sent them to the Pound, which I DO NOT want to do. I LOVE MY BABIES!!!!!!! Joann

Excuse me Dennis, but pets are important, and they all love their masters. They don't love the one that feeds them the most, they love their owners.I know this because my sister never takes care of her kitten,I do all the work.Yet when she comes home from work every day she runs to her and starts purring like a boat, and then she tears my arms apart. Also, animals have their own personalities.Dennis I hope you change your stupid opinion about pets. And if you hate pets so much why are you on this so called ridiculous site anyway?!Get out of here you jerk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![And by the way,you just got burned by a fifth grade girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

An important question that pet owners should be asking themselves is: How safe is their pet at the VETS????
The ISAR Monograph, "Harming Companion Animals," identifies veterinary malpractice as the #1 cause of harm to companion animals. This national tragedy is drastically under-reported.
