Most Important Training Tool - Cheri's Answer

Q: What is the most important tool in dog training?

dog behavior begging at dinner tableThe most important tool in dog training is your body language. I never use verbal commands when training because they are simply not effective. I especially advise to stay away from using "baby talk"- the high pitched sound makes dogs anxious.

When teaching your puppy, refrain from moving around too much or walking away from the dog. Make sure that you stand your ground with your head held high. Don't make direct eye contact because that shows dogs that you are challenging them.

For example, if a dog jumps on you don't step back and retreat because the dog would then become more powerful. Instead step towards the dog as though you are moving into them. In the beginning, it is best not to show affection in order to establish your leadership role. Affection should be a reward, not a give-in.

The number one mistake that people make with their pets is they try and humanize them. Dogs were meant to be dogs and should be treated as such. You are their confident leader and they look to you for guidance. Make sure you step up to the plate in this position and enforce good behavior from the beginning.
