Grooming Needs By Coat Type: Long Coat

Dogs such as the Lhasa Apso and Collie have a long coat that requires a great deal of care. These types of coats often include an undercoat with a long, straight outer coat. Combined, the undercoat and outer coat provide a layer of warmth for breeds with this coat type.

The maintenance for these dogs include everyday grooming and a trim on a regular basis. To care for the grooming needs of the long coat, you'll need a slicker brush to get out knots and mats, a pin brush to bring out shine, scissors, for trimming hair around the feet and back of legs, and a comb to brush through the feathered part of the dog's fur.

When taking out mats and tangles with the slicker brush, it's important to use gentle strokes to avoid a potentially painful grooming session for the dog and pulling out hair.
