Q: Feeding dogs from the dinner table is often an issue. Dogs come to expect food and will bark, bite and scratch until they get it. How can pet owners prevent this?

Don't start off feeding your dog from the table. It is the early formation of a very bad habit. As a pet owner, you must maintain a leadership position at all times and remind your dog of that on a daily basis. Dogs will never scratch their leader for food. It is not the food itself that is the actual problem; it is the way in which the dogs are getting fed. You would never let your children grab at you for food, so why should your dog be any different?

Human foods, especially meats, are similar to what dogs would catch if they were in the wild so it is totally fine to feed them this food. If you are going to feed your dog human food, you should stick to these guidelines:

• While you are eating, make sure your dog is sitting at a certain distance from the table.
• Don't let your dog eat until you are finished with your meal.
• Put their favorite pillow in the dining room at a safe distance away from the table as an incentive. Make sure that your dog is wearing their leash.
• If your dog continues to beg, stand up straight using your whole body and point in the direction of the pillow. Use their leash to lead them there if necessary.
• Use chew toys as distractions and make sure to give treats as rewards for staying in their designated area.
• Never let your dog in the kitchen. Create an invisible barrier with your training so that they know not to enter. Not only is it a bad habit, but it is unsanitary to have your dog (and their hair!) near food.

Form healthy habits early on and mealtimes will be peaceful for you and your pooch.
