Bounce's 15 Most Lovable Shelter Pets

Name: Joey - ADOPTED
Location: Charleston, SC
Gender: Male
Breed: Dachshund
Color: Tan & Red
Age: 1-2 Years Old
Weight: 6 lbs
Housebroken: YES

NEW HOME UPDATE: I have been in my new home for two weeks now and I am so happy! I love my home, especially running up and down the hallway and laying in my owners' bed. I have plenty of squeaky toys and my favorite thing to do with my owners is take walks. I am adjusting very well to my new life. Thank you to everyone at the animal shelter and to everyone who voted for me! -Joey

I was found running down a busy road near Charleston. A concerned citizen scooped me up and realized I had a very serious eye injury. The Charleston Animal Society veterinarian diagnosed me with an enlarged cornea and prolapsed left eye. I had to have surgery to remove my eye.

I need someone who can guide me through my recovery and help me learn to use my good eye to see my way to a happy ending. I am cautious when sudden moves are made around me and I need a quiet, patient home to help me get over his loss of my family and my eye.

Joey's Favorites:

Favorite activity: Playing with my squeaky toy
Favorite toy: Squeaky shoe
Favorite food: Hot dogs

Strong likes: A warm lap and gentle touch
Strong dislikes: Fast moving hands

Household Notes: I will do well with another dog or cat and would be best with an older couple or family without children because I need to be in a very gentle home.

I have shared my home and love with a handicapped dog, a Great Dane. Joey, if I lived closer you would be at my house sharing treats with Logan, Ellie Mae and Minnie. You will find a safe home and be loved for the rest of your life. How couragous you are!!!

Anonymous January 30, 2009 10:25 AM

I would love to adopt Joey. But I have many inside babies now and would prove too much for the little guy, even though my inside babies would love him, I'm sure with his condition they would overpower him. Hope you get asopted Joey to a really good family.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 10:28 AM

I have two doxies and a Grm Shprd. They are my angels. If you want Joey, there are many rescue places in that area that will make it possible. Many truckers cross the country and can deliver Joey anywhere. Open your heart & give this brave lit'l guy his forever home. God bless you Joey! I would be glad for you to come and live with my managerie but cannot afford the trip to come and get you. I hope whoever adopts you will give you a kind and loving home. I would if I could . I'm for you!

Anonymous January 30, 2009 2:07 PM

Okay, I just read all of these comments and I have to say that I wish everyone in the entire world was like all of you and me! I know if we all could, we would adopt and take in every single animal that we could! It's my dream that someday only compassionate, loving people will occupy the earth and all the cruel people, well they will be somewhere else! Thank you all for being you and as for you Joey, you are such a sweetie pie and I know you will find an amazing family to spoil you for the rest of your life!:)Good Luck buddy!

Anonymous January 30, 2009 2:33 PM

Thanks to the Charleston Humane Society for saving him instead of destroying him!

Anonymous January 30, 2009 3:16 PM

joey is so cute. I would love to have him. We have 2 black n tans and he would be a great addition to our family. I have older children who are great with Dotty and Emily and Joey can come live with us in Virginia if we can work it out.

I have 2 babies,a Border Collie & a Sheltie, both male, I had a Dacshund named Doc, but lost him 2 years ago to Diabetes, he was 11 & a sweetie.Joey looks like my Doc. wish I could adopt him, he is very precious, im just not sure what my 2 boys would do, they love to play. I also have 10+ stray cats in my back yard, & they are all healthy, they stay in my back yard most of the time, I even have them all beds on my patio to keep them dry & I keep them well fed. just wish i could afford to get them spayed & nuetered, i live in Garland, tx & tried to get SPCA in Dallas to come & get them, but they told me to call animal control in Garland, I dont want them put to sleep, they are ferel, but they are used to me. my dogs do not like them, so i have to keep them seperated.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 4:50 PM

I love chihuahua's and immediately voted for Hans until I saw Joey, May god bless him and give him a special home.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 5:16 PM

This goes to show how irresponsible people are. it makes me mad. This poor handsome little dog really deserves a decent and loving home. If I didn't have three rescues already, i'd drive down there and adopt him- he's a miracle dog.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 6:00 PM

Joey I'm so sorry that you got mistreated. My pug only has one eye and is also afraid of sudden movements around her. She is doing amazing with only one eye and we're sure you will too! Good luck with your future. We hope you find a loving and caring home!

Anonymous January 30, 2009 6:11 PM

I wish I could adopt you

Anonymous January 30, 2009 6:34 PM

I'll keep voting for Joey. Thank God he was saved. With TLC he will bounce back. Animals are so forgiving.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 7:03 PM

He is a very special gift, and will Bless someone somewhere. He just needs to find that special someone. My Prayers to you Joey.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 7:07 PM

I want to give Joey a loving home! I don't know how I would get him because I live so far away but would love to try. We already have a miniature schnauzer that is blind due to cataracts on both eyes but she knows her way around the house and yard very well and does great on a leash too. Her mother was her "guide dog" and she only had one eye. Unfortunately she died two years ago and now Patra is very lonely. I think Joey and Patra would be great together! They could help each other and my kids are all grown and on their own. I will check into the possibility of adopting Joey and will definitely vote for him every day. I'm so glad someone saw it fit to nominate him.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 7:22 PM

Joey.... you can come live with me. I live in the mountains in Oregon you would love it here

Anonymous January 30, 2009 8:03 PM

You're the best little guy. What a champ. God was watching out for you. I hope you find your dream home.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 8:23 PM

If I could I would take Joey in a heartbeat. I have 10 rescued birds and would be affraid that their movement would scare the poor little guy too much. I would bet that if everyone who posted comments took a few hours out of their day and a few dollars for gas out of their wallet, we could tag team Joey anywhere in the country, to a loving home. Thank you for helping him and showing him that not all people hurt animals and some actually do love them.

Anonymous January 30, 2009 8:59 PM

Dear Joey.... I just love you honey. I have a (2nd rescue dog) now who is dying of cancer.(We lost our first rescue to cancer also) The chemo bills are quite much and we need to give him a lot of attention right now.

I would take JOEY if I could but it is not a good time for us now. We live in Arizona...too far from Pa.(A friend sent this to me so I could vote for him)

Kisses and huggggggsssss to you Joey. Kisses and hugggsss...again to you sweetie!

I live in Indiana and have 8 rescued doggies. Many are now elderly. I have 2 young dachshunds, and would love to give Joey a home. Anyway you could get him to Indiana for me?

Anonymous January 31, 2009 8:50 AM

I vote for Joey. I have two large breed dogs in a small Townhome. I think Joey needs a calmer atmosphere than what I could offer. Good Luck Joey.

Anonymous January 31, 2009 8:57 AM

My husband and I are both diasbled and we take care of, with all of our hearts, our disabled rescue cat. We love and protect him. My eyes are so filled right now,I can barely see this screen. He is such a beautiful little boy, and can't understand how some people can be so cruel. Thank God, we are not all like that. I pray that a good, loving person or family, will adopt him and open up their hearts to beautiful little Joey. I pray the he gets the love and tenderness he so much deserves. Regretfully, I am unable to adopt another. Gentle hugs and kisses are sent his way. He's won my heart and certainly my vote. Dee in NY.

Anonymous January 31, 2009 10:01 AM

I challange all other seniors and retirees to give Joey a loving home. Currently, my 6 yr old rescue, Jack is fighting lymphoma and deserves my full attn or I would drive 2 states to adopt Joey. Who can resist Joey's constant winking at the ladies? He's got my vote and prayers for a loving home.

Anonymous January 31, 2009 10:09 AM

Joey: You WILL be adopted very soon. So many compassionate people have already voted for you! You are a sweetheart! I wish you a loving home!!

Anonymous January 31, 2009 11:55 AM

Joey, don't worry, you will find a loving owner who will understand your needs. My Border Collie Annie was rescued and needed to have her eye removed shortly after I get her. Amazingly, she was a happier dog the day after surgery. The vet said that she must have been in a lot of pain. We have a special bond now and her joy in life is going for a walk, going for a ride, or just going anywhere. The right family will love you no matter what. Best wishes.

Anonymous January 31, 2009 12:42 PM

Joey, you deserve the best. I lost a rescued dog, Rocky, 5 years ago at 13 yrs old to diabetes that looked a lot like you. He lost an eye to diabetes then went blind with cataracts. But, he figured out how to follow my golden retriever around and went anywhere he wanted. I hope you find a very loving home like Rocky did. You need love and attention and maybe another dog to help you out. I vote for you everyday & pray for you to find the home you deserve every night. I live in Indiana so I can't come and get you. I wish I could because you are just so cute! Lots of love, Joey.

Anonymous January 31, 2009 5:52 PM

I wish I lived closer...Joey would be sleeping with me tonight! I have a rescued chihuahua Tia.

Anonymous February 1, 2009 12:03 AM

Joey, you're adorable. If I didn't have 4 rescues myself I would take you. May God bless you with the perfect home!

Anonymous February 1, 2009 1:00 AM

i cried when i seen his picture and read his story. i am a veterinary technician and see many cases like this but this dog somehow touched my heart. i want him in my life

Anonymous February 2, 2009 11:09 AM

Joey is a brave little guy and I will pray that a special family will give him a loving home. I will vote for you

Anonymous February 3, 2009 5:01 PM

Joey,
People have alot of excuses not to take you, and I feel
bad that I also have one. I have two large German Sherpherds, and 4 cats. It is never quiet around here.
Like so many people I have rescued so many, and they all
got a home, no matter what. You are precious and loved.

Anonymous February 3, 2009 7:44 PM

JOEY,
YOU REMIND ME OF MY "ONE EYED" BARNEY (A BEAUTIFUL (CHOCOLATE)DACHSHUND) WHO PASSED AWAY IN MAY 2008 DUE TO LIVER CANCER. HE ALSO HAD TO HAVE HIS LEFT EYE REMOVED DUE TO GLAUCOMA AND OTHER COMPLICATIONS, BUT HE BOUNCED BACK FAST FROM HIS SURGERY AND DID FINE WITH ONE EYE. WE HAD HIM FOR 15 WONDERFUL YEARS AND I STILL MISS HIM SO MUCH! WE ALSO HAVE A SHELTER DOG, BAILEY GRACE, WHO WE ADOPTED IN AUGUST 2005 WHEN SHE WAS JUST A PUPPY, SHE HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO OUR FAMILY AND HAS BECOME MY SHADOW NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE SINCE BARNEY PASSED AWAY, OUR DAUGHTER ADDED ANOTHER WONDERFUL ADDITION TO OUR FAMILY WHEN SHE PURCHASED KRICKET (A DAPPLE DACHSHUND PUPPY) WE HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH HER, SHE WILL NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF MY BEAUTIFUL BARNEY, BUT SHE SURE HAS HELPED OUR HEARTS HEAL A LITTLE BIT EACH DAY AND SHE REALLY KEEPS BAILEY GRACE BUSY PLAYING AND WRESTLING, WHICH HAS BEEN GREAT FOR BAILEY GRACE(SHE MISSED BARNEY TOO). GOOD LUCK TO YOU, I HOPE YOU FIND A LOVING HOME AND GET BETTER EACH DAY!

Anonymous February 4, 2009 12:12 PM

Joey is absolutely adorable and if we didn't already have our limit of dogs, we would certainly take him. For all of you who want to adopt Joey or any of these dogs, go to Paws-Claws-Rescuers-Transporters followed by your city and state. This is a group of truck drivers who will transport these babies right to you free of charge in order to help these wonderful pets find those loving, forever homes.

Anonymous February 5, 2009 9:21 PM

I had a very special cat for a few years, rescued from the street as a stray, who was blind in one eye due to some unknown trauma and who was a sweet, adorable, loving kitty. She became ill with FIP and had to be euthanized by our vet. I loved her and miss her very much. It is in her memory that I vote for Joey and hope he finds a wonderful "forever home"--he deserves it so much.

Anonymous February 5, 2009 11:28 PM

Joey, you are most beautiful soul! I wish I was near enough to adopt you! I've been voting for you, sweetie. I hope you find your forever home VERY soon!!!

Anonymous February 7, 2009 8:10 AM

I live in Texas & have 2 doxies now & I just recently adopted a 10 year old shepherd mix from the HSPCA. They are all so wonderful & my new fur-face is a dream. Each day her personality seems to come alive more & more. My heart goes out to Joey & all the other homeless animals. They are truely wonderful. I have been voting daily for Joey...he has a special forever home just waiting for him & I am sure that with this contest exposure his new forever family will find him soon.

Anonymous February 7, 2009 1:15 PM

Congratulations on finding a great new home Joey! We've been rooting for you!

Anonymous February 10, 2009 12:16 PM

All dogs deserve a forever home, unfortunatley too many dogs with "special needs" don't find them. I am just so thrilled that Joey found his forever home and I pray that the future holds a world where there will be no more shelters and no more "unwanted" animals. We all need to be loved, even the four legged ones! Congrats to Joey on finding his forever home. God bless the person(s) who adopted this sweet little guy.

Anonymous February 11, 2009 2:27 PM

Way to go Joey know your forever family will love you a lot!

jazznast March 6, 2009 8:51 AM

unfortunately for me and about a dozen doggies I live in a rowhous in Philadelphia. My yard is only 18 by 42. wish it were ten times the size. I would have more pets. already have 3 dogs and 3 cats and a box turtle. there is no more room in our bed. but good luck finding homes

Carissa March 6, 2009 9:37 AM

I'm so glad Joey found a home!

Cindy March 6, 2009 10:10 AM

I was so happy to see that Joey found a good home. I wish it was with me. All animals need to have a loving home. They are so precious and give so much love in return.

Tina March 6, 2009 10:18 AM

I am so glad to see that Joey found his "forever" home...he is the cutest little Dachshund. I have a long haired Doxie and I know how much love they can give. I have spent the better part of my life rescuing pets in need of good homes, most of which I kept as my own. Right now I have 5 dogs and 1 cat. I wish I had room for more!

Cathy March 6, 2009 10:42 AM

Joey is a dog who reminds everyone of the gusto for life and that life is worth the wait for love...He is the cutest little dog...

anonymous March 6, 2009 10:45 AM

Yay for Joey! I have a female dachshund who also lost her left eye in a battle over something (probably a treat)with my lab. When i pulled Joey's picture up, i thought i was looking at my Pokey! I'm so happy Joey has found a loving home - here's hoping the remaining 4 will find one too (as well as all the millions of homeless campanion animals)!!

Jeannie March 6, 2009 11:09 AM

Joey is too cute. When I was a child I always wanted a dachshund. Christmas morning, very disappointed, I got a stuffed dog. Now, as an adult I have 3 dogs; 2 maltese and a morkie and I love them so much. They are family. How wonderful you and Joey found each other. He just looks like a fun little guy. I was drawn to his little face.
Congrats.

Kay March 9, 2009 3:07 PM

Joey was the sweetest dog even when in serious pain he never showed anyone. He is a perfect representative of shelter pets everywhere.

James Heater March 9, 2009 7:05 PM

Is their any one that could help kids go to vet school?

Carol Spooner March 10, 2009 6:32 AM

So happy that Joey was adopted. What a beautiful boy. His family is so lucky to have such a nice dog.

sandy March 12, 2009 6:07 PM

I have always taken in abused dogs. Right now I have a wonderful poodle that was abused so bad. They destroyed his back, bladder and he was bleeding where some one gouged him out with a pair of clppiers trying to groom him,ear infection running down his neck and then thrown out of a car. I have had him for 4 years now and spent thousands of dollars to get him better. His back is better but he will always drizzle urine even though he goes out all the time. He doesn't lose his bowels any more and his ears are better. The only problem I have now is his terrible skin probl;ems. He is such a womderful dog in every way. I could leave a plate of meat on the floor and got to the store and it would still be there when I come back. He still has some fear of riding in the car and of loud noises or movements. He is such a love. I named him Racer so he would walk and run again. He does. I wish I could take every dog that needs a home. I just lost my abused Bichon with a stroke in October. he was abused for 12 years but with good care he lived to be 19 years old. Prayers for Joey and God bless him in every way.

Cindy March 12, 2009 7:08 PM

Yipee another wonderful human that sees the need for a loving home for abused and injured animals . I have 2 rescue dogs and a slaughter horse. How dare we as a human race abused and neglect any of Gods creatures. A huge and loving thank you from me to all who have saved Gods creatures GOD BLESS everyone

Rhonnda R. March 12, 2009 7:59 PM

God Bless all of those people who care about these needy creatures and actually "DO" something to help them all over the world. Animals have souls, too,...and need love,...so think of it as 'animals are people, too' and keep up the good work of caring for all of them. Thank you from someone who wishes they could do more, too. Bless you all!!!!

Patti March 12, 2009 8:36 PM

I voted for you everyday Joey! I'm so glad you won! I had a dachshund with diabeties and he had to have an eye removed. I also had a golden retriever at the time and the golden really helped the dachshund find his way.
I hope you find a home that will meet all of your needs. You are such a special animal. You deserve the best, you've already been through the worst. Good luck Joey!

Anonymous March 12, 2009 10:18 PM

Joey is so cute I wish I could take every animal and give them a forever home. We have 12 cats and 4 dogs and most of them were strays. If I ever win the lottery big I'm going to get a bus and have as many animals fixed as I can afford.
