Our 1 year old Cat gave birth to kittens 5 weeks ago and this past week has had diarrhea. I have been giving lots of water to her & moderate food. What can I do short of a vet?

We adopted a full-sized labradoodle at 18 mos. and have had him for two years. We tried every diet under the sun....I finally started giving him liv-active cottage cheese, 4 oz. in the a.m. before a can of Pedigree wet food (he refuses dry food - no matter how I have tried to disguise it - and I have had dogs for 40 years) - after he traveled with my husband and then his sister for two months (within US - but away from home and familiar) - his sister decided to discontinue cottage cheese (which had -after about two weeks finally made a difference) and I have no idea what she actually fed him -- when I picked him up more than a month ago he was straining and having horrible diarrhea. I tried re-adding the cheese and Pedigree canned - but nothing improved so I took him to vet within a few days - who put him on 500 mg of Sulfasalazine 1 b.i.d. f0r 10 days - he took the last pill early this a.m. with food - and now, this evening, just had the same straining with scant, runny poop. I am concerned that the vet did not do a stool check (no other vet I ever had omitted this step) and also that 500 mg. b.i.d. is not enough for a 95 lb. dog after reading that the usual dose was 10-15 mg. for every 10 lbs. every 8 hours. He also insisted I buy Hill's ID prescription diet from him (cheaper at PetSmart with a prescription - but he would not give me one) - so, my instincts tell me that this is not the vet for us - and, until he sees another vet (today is Sunday), can I give him Immodium pills? Thank you for your help. He was doing fine on occasional rinsed tuna, salmon, sweet potatoes, etc. I would mix in with his food - and the cottage cheese with the live active cultures seemed to help -- now it seems as if we are starting below zero - AGAIN!

Dr.Lauren,We have an 11 year old cat who has had diarrhea for about 3 days.We have 4 cats and 2 kittens so it took a little while to figure out which one it was. What is wrong and what can we do for him?

My chaweenie has had diarrhea off and on for a couple months. I have had it tested and there is are no parasites. I have not changed food or the little snacks he does get. I have tried rice and cottage cheese recommended by the vet but no help on an ongoing basis. What could be wrong?
