If you’re leash training your new dog and all you’re winding up with is a tug-of-war game, there is hope. By putting a few corrections in place, you should find that your new dog will respond well to leash training.

Here are some pointers to curb an over-enthusiastic dog during leash training:

• Practice walking your dog indoors in a hallway during leash training. The hallway will confine the space he’s walking in and encourage him to stay by your side.
• As soon as your new dog walks ahead of you, call his name and immediately turn around and walk the other way. This action will teach him to follow your lead, rather than having you follow his lead.
• If your new dog continues to tug at the leash, stop dead in your tracks each time he does so. Start walking again after waiting for a few moments. Each time he tugs, immediately stop walking. It should take a number of tries, but your dog will eventually get the message if you are consistent.
