If your dog is an excessive barker, you likely want to curb the noise level – if not for your sanity, then at least to keep the neighbors happy. Here are some dog training tips you can use to quiet the excessive barker.

Dog training when you’re at home:

• Keep your dog on a lead. If she starts to bark, call her to come to your side and signal her in a hushed tone. If she ignores you, take her lead and repeat the signal.
• Avoid encouraging the barking by yelling.  It will only encourage your dog to bark more.
• Keep your dog occupied and entertained as much as possible, as barking will occur more frequently during boredom.

When you’re not at home:

• You can try a citronella collar that will release a spray during prolonged barking. It’s humane and can be effective.
• Block your dog’s access to window areas, which can encourage barking at passersby and moving cars.

Try to avoid leaving your dog home alone for long stretches. When you’re gone, be sure to give her plenty of chew items for entertainment. Long periods alone and confinement can lead to boredom and excessive barking.
