If you’re shopping for dog supplies for a new dog, it’s easy to become overwhelmed or go overboard on new purchases. You want to have the basic dog supplies you need for training and care of your new dog, but you don’t want to purchase too many unnecessary items. Here is a list of essential dog supplies you should have on hand for a new dog.
- Water/Food bowls – They come in a variety of materials, including stainless steel, ceramic and plastic. Get two bowls -- one for food and one for water -- in a size that’s appropriate for the size and breed of your dog.
- Collar and leash – Every dog needs to have a collar and leash for walks and outings. As an alternative, you may want to purchase a harness instead for a dog that may have tracheal difficulties with a collar.
- Identification – Every dog should have an identification tag with his/her name and a way to contact you.
- Food – Select a dog food that is in your budget that is appropriate for your dog. Many of the commercial dog foods are geared toward dogs of a certain age and size.
- Bedding – What you choose as bedding for your dog depends on her age and your personal preferences for your household. A puppy may need a crate for housetraining. An older dog may use anything from a quilted blanket to a dog bed complete with a mattress and frame.
- Grooming Tools – The ASPCA Complete Guide to Dogs recommends you get at least a brush, flea comb, nail trimmer, small toothbrush and dog toothpaste.
Treats and chews – Every dog should have toys and treats to keep her occupied and entertained. Get a handful of varied toys that are appropriate in size for your dog, as well as real or synthetic bones for chewing.
