Cats need regular sessions with a brush or comb to keep their hair in good condition. Brushing removes dirt and spreads natural oils through the coat, preventing tangles and keeping the skin clean and irritant-free.
Shorthaired cats need brushing only once a week. For shorthaired cats, first use a metal comb to work through the hair from head to tail, being especially gentle near the chest and belly. Then, use a bristle or rubber brush to remove dead and loose hair.
Longhaired cats should be brushed daily. Start by combing at the belly and legs, then brushing in an upward motion with a bristle or rubber brush. To brush a longhaired cat’s tail, make a part down the middle then brush the fur out on either side.

Use a soft-bristled brush for the first grooming session, starting at the tip of the fur and gently working deeper into the coat. Experts recommend always brushing in the direction of your cat’s coat.
A piece of pantyhose slipped over the brush will make cleanup easier; the bristles poke through, and the stocking can be discarded at the end of the session.
Keep brushes in various places around the house so you can catch your cat when it’s in the mood to groom.
