Westminster Crowns New Winner

A Sussex Spaniel named Stump has taken the grand prize of Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

At 10 years old, Stump is the oldest dog to ever win at Westminster. He beat out nearly 2,500 canine competitors to take the title of top dog. This is also the first time a dog of the Sussex Spaniel breed has won the title.

Incredibly, Stump came out of retirement just last week to compete. He was retired five years ago after recovering from an illness that kept him in Texas A&M University's veterinary center for 19 days.

The Sussex Spaniel won Best in Show by besting six other group winners. The group winners for 2009 are as follows:

Hound: Scottish Deerhound
Terrier: Scottish Terrier
Non-Sporting: Poodle
Herding: Puli
Sporting: Sussex Spaniel
Working: Giant Schnauzer
Toy: Brussels Griffon

Considered by many to be the top prize in the dog show world, winning Best in Show at Westminster comes with immediate fame and glory for the champion pooch. Last year's winner, Uno the Beagle, was perhaps the most popular Best in Show in history.

of course the spaniel won. how many spaniels are actually in the event? it's like court packing but with dogs ... i think there is a law against that.

Bravo! Stump! I would love to see the non-sporting group sharpei to win in best in show! That's my opinion! I don't think that the black poodle should of won best in the nonsporting group!

Since border collies are the best herders of all, why don't they ever win? I really liked Stump and am happy for him and his family.

Bravo Stump! (love the name) old dogs don't need new tricks their old ones are obviously still good enough to win the Grand Old Show of dog shows. Am myself a very proud owner of a beatiful Border Collie.

This is a great show! Love watching it, esp the TOY catagory. They are always so adorable.

Congrats Stump and owner! Being a dog lover I dont care which breed or group wins. It's just good to have an event that looks out for animals and allows people to get in touch with the animal side of the universe. You go Stump, looking mature and strutting your stuff - you've been around for a while. Let the pups sit back and watch!

it was a toss up between Stump and the Giant Schnauzer, but it's nice to see the "underdog" win....no pun intended.
