Michael Vick to Play NFL Football Again

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who recently completed a two-year prison sentence for dog-fighting charges, has signed a two year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Vick was recently reinstated by the NFL after being suspended indefinitely in 2007 following his criminal charges. Vick served a 23 month sentence for bankrolling a dog-fighting operation out of one of his homes. Vick admitted dogs were "executed" if they failed to perform. Some were drowned or electrocuted.

Animal rights organizations are concerned about the message Vick's signing sends. The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a statement it was "incredibly disappointed." The organization's chief executive officer said she believes it will be hard for many Eagles fans "to root for someone who participated in the hanging, drowning, electrocution and shooting of dogs."

The CEO of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), said in a statement that "Commissioner Roger Goodell and the Philadelphia Eagles have granted Michael Vick a second chance, and the ASPCA expects Mr. Vick to express remorse for his actions, as well as display more compassion and sound judgment this time around than he did during his previous tenure with the NFL."

Vick has yet to comment on the deal, but when he was reinstated by the NFL last month said, "I fully understand that playing football in the NFL is a privilege, not a right, and I am truly thankful for [the] opportunity I have been given. As you can imagine, the last two years have given me time to re-evaluate my life, mature as an individual and fully understand the terrible mistakes I made in the past and what type of life I must lead moving forward."

Do you believe Vick has changed? Is he sorry? Should he be allowed to play professional football again? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

no he shouldnt go back to the nfl and i dont think he has changed at all. and it makes my stomach turn to think he is going back and the people who will be supporting him. he should have no fans at all.

Linda August 16, 2009 12:14 PM

NO, NO, NO...If I had been an Eagles fan, I would NO longer be one for taking on the likes of Michael Vicks. He should have NO second chances are seeing what he did to those poor dogs... I am an animal lover and what was done was a cruelty that in my opinion can NEVER be forgotten or forgiven. Shame on the EAGLES...

Linda August 16, 2009 12:17 PM

Shame on the EAGELS for taking on the likes of Michael Vicks...What he did and condoned to those pups was and is an unforgettable and unforgivable crime. He should have done to him what he did to those dogs...Maybe than, we humans would think twice before being cruel to animals...Again, shame on the Eagles...

Michelle August 16, 2009 3:33 PM

I use to be an Eagles fan untill tuesday night...I have season tickets so I was sitting at the first game of the season and the Eagles anounced that they signed Michael Vick. I got up and left. I have since then sold my season tickets...both seats! Michael Vick should NOT EVEN BE OUT OF JAIL! What he did was unforgivable! Michael Vicks should be hung, electricuted and shot! The Eagles SUCK!

Connie August 17, 2009 12:34 AM

Now he will have access to big money again, so he can hide his 'dirty little passtimes' with animal cruelty. We don't need a football play that much! He has not changed.

I am a creature lover. Over the years I have developed more respect for creatures of the canine persuasion than I have for the "human" race. I used to refer to dogs and cats as animals but, I was wrong. After reading about what people like Mike Vick and what they do to pass time, I feel correct in refering to him and others like him as animals. Animals with bloodlust. They make damn good money as celebrities and feel that they can do whatever they and get away with doing so. They can pay their way out of most any situation. That goes against the rules of life. I agree with Linda. They should do to him what he did to those defensless little creatures and then some. We as the "intelligent" human race need to take charge of our justice system to protect our rights and the rights of our fellow creatures on this earth for as long as we exist on this earth. Animal like Vick need to realize that ALL CREATURES HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIFE just as well as he does. And that by destroying the lives that he did, he should be removed from society for a much longer time than he served. He should not be free because he is or was a celebrity. He should serve the same term as anyone else. Be it 4 or 5 years. But not at home with an ankle bracelet. IN PRISON!!!!!

Someone who could do those things to a living thing,is not wrapped to tight

Debbi August 22, 2009 3:27 AM

SHAME ON Commissioner Roger Goodell and the Philadelphia Eagles!!!!!! ANYONE who has spent time in FEDERAL PRISON should NEVER BE ALLOWED the privilege of playing in the NFL - NEVER! THIS IS TRULY DISGUSTING! NO FEDERAL PAROLEE SHOULD GET A SECOND CHANCE. Vick never gave the dogs he tortured and abused a second chance. He KNEW that what he was doing was wrong, but because of fame and money thought he could get away with it. IF THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES LET HIM PLAY (AGAIN) IN THE NFL, THEY ARE ONLY SHOWING THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT CRIME DOES PAY! Vick has NOT changed, but we should change who is the Commissioner of the NFL to someone who is more RESPONSIBLE!

Ann August 22, 2009 3:54 AM

IS the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, a FORMER FEDERAL INMATE? Is that why he being overly lenient? NO FORMER (OR CURRENT FEDERAL INMATE) SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY IN THE NFL. If you want to play with the big boys (for the big money) THEN YOU FOLLOW THE RULES (& LAWS). You break the rules (or laws) and YOU SHOULD BE OUT PERMANENTLY!

Karen August 24, 2009 1:28 AM

NO NO NO First of all Michael Sicko Vico is beyond dangerous. Who in their right mind could think of such forms of torture, or worse yet look in a poor dogs face and kill him AND IN SUCH UNSPEAKABLE WAYS. The many forms of torture come from a very deranged, troubled and devious mind. He is a menace to society and should be in a jail cell forever. I think his career should be cleaning jail cells and jail toilets with a toothbrush for the rest of his life.
He thought he was to big, rich and famous to abide by any rules, did unthinkable things and is now being rewarded for doing them. Roger Goodell is an ex-fed inmate also - guess birds of a feather DO flock together. I HOPE MICHAEL SICKO VICKO FINDS NOT A MOMENT OF HAPPINESS WITH HIS 6.5 MILLION DOLLAR SALARY. I HOPE HE HAS NIGHTMARES FOR HIS ENTIRE LIFE FOR WHAT HE DID, AND HAD DONE TO EACH AND EVERY ANIMAL HE TORTURED. HE IS THE BEAST OF ALL BEASTS - AND ROGER GOODELL YOU FOLLOW SECOND IN LINE - WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??????. NFL YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO HAVE SUCH A BEAST FOR AN NFL COMMISSIONER! THOSE POOR ANIMALS THE SICKO TORTURED NEVER GOT A SECOND CHANCE - THEN WHY DOES HE????????
TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SO WONDERFUL TO SPEAK UP FOR THESE POOR DEFENSELESS ANIMALS WHO COULDN'T - MAY GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

can;t believe that money rolls the wheel here..this pig of a guy will apolagize for awhile, hang his head until the first paycheque comes in...then lets get it on...put a collar around his neck, make him bark as he plays football,if he loses a game, put him down..shame on the football team for even giving this snake a look in...money talks...

Kim August 24, 2009 6:39 PM

I am extremely disappointed in Philadelphia for this decision and will be cheering against the Eagles this year. Michael Vick should have been banned from the NFL permanently. Instead we reward him. This is the society we live in.

Louise Johnson August 25, 2009 12:19 PM

Back Off- he paid a hugh price for what he did-and paid
in prison- If you all are so into this- go to Nebraska go to Iowa go to Arkansas- go to any state you want and there are worse than Vick-he also took full resposiblitity for the whole deal- no it's not rite what they were doing- But Vick has definitely paid his price and by the way as soon as money is mention all the Vulchers come out- and if you don't back off- a lot of
animal shelters and etc will suffer. I became a Philly
eagle fan-Vick is good and you all know it

MaryLou Buehler August 25, 2009 2:48 PM

Vick should not be playing any sport that youngsters can watch. He is a vicious killer and the NFL is condoneing what he did by letting him back into football. I will NEVER watch the eagles play as long as they condone what he did by hiring him back. HE SHOULD BE IN JAIL FOR LIFE FOR TORTURING AND KILLING THOSE INNOCENT DEFENSLESS ANIMALS. HE IS A POOR EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING IN MY OPINION,AND THE NFL IS SETTING A VERY BAD EXAMPLE OF PRO ATHLETES BY TAKING HIM BACK. HE IS NOT SORRY FOR WHAT HE DID AND WILL "NEVER" BE ABLE TO CONVINCE ME OF THAT. HE IS JUST MONEY HUNGRY AND FEELS HE IS ABOVE THE LAW BECAUSE HE IS A PRO ATHLETE. BOOO BOOO BOOO TO VICK AND THE NFL FOR BACKING DOWN ON THEIR PROMISE TO NEVER LET HIM BACK IN THE NFL !!!!!!!!!

maria August 25, 2009 2:55 PM

no he should not be allowed to play football ever again and earn such an extravagant salary. It would be fair if he could experience a little of what those dogs had to endure, they were helpless animals. I have a dog and we cant spoil her enough - i could not imagine ever hurting an animal on purpose. He should have been executed himself (an eye for an eye).

Karen August 26, 2009 10:54 AM

He should not be allowed back into the NFL. He only cares about himself. I saw no remorse on 60 minutes - how could he live with himself after the torture he imposed on those dogs? Let's see how the Eagle 'fans' embrace him. He will get his payback from a greater power eventually.

Jimbo August 27, 2009 10:07 AM

Mike has done what the courts have asked. Time to start a new life. What about people that drink and drive that kill people....what worse? There are millions of drunk drivers compared to dog kills.

Trish August 27, 2009 2:51 PM

Yes, he served his time. Does that mean he should be able to, in essence, pick up where he left off, in a high-profile, high-paying job?

The reality here is that if you or I were to commit and be convicted of a heinous crime, not one of us would be welcomed back to our previous positions with open arms. We would have difficulty finding work picking up trash!

The NFL has to stop rewarding bad behaviour - and Vick is not the only one that has benefited from the lack of prudence on the NFL's part. I am so tired of thugs being allowed to play football, and this particular example was the final straw. There will be no more NFL football for me, and I have been a huge fan since high school. I have my own fantasy football team! Had, I should say.

I am boycotting the NFL. I just can't support an organization that would let such criminals back in to play.

And to Louise - he absolutely did not pay a huge price. He served 18 months in prison. For the abuse, torture and murder of animals that were in his care, not to mention engaging in a criminal activity, such as dogfighting...it amounts to a slap on the wrist, especially when he is able to get out of prison and go right back to the NFL. I would be more apt to call it justice if he were denied the opportunity to play. And he only took responsibility when he was given up by his cohorts and could not escape the truth.

tom August 28, 2009 3:05 PM

All that Vick has proven, so far, is that he did not run a dogfighting ring while serving his rediculously easy sentence in federal prison. I believe in 2nd chances, but they must be EARNED. If he had spent a year or so, after release, championing animal causes and helping the fight against brutal dogfighting, he might have been seen as trying to earn a 2nd chance. As it has gone, Vick and his supporters are merely engaged in PR/BS. Shame on the Eagles! Shame on federal and Virginia officials for not becoming serious in efforts to attact the "blood sport." Eagle fans who sincerely care about decetcy than football should boycott both Vick and the team.

michael August 30, 2009 3:24 PM

everybody on here is crazy to think a man should get a second chance yall wont be happy until you see michael vick down and broke thats all you'll not really mad about the dog fighting thing yall mad that he's gonna get a chance to make more money they yall will ever make. if you guys had suck a big problem with it then u need to leave vick alone and go try and stop the dog fighting thats going on now... its no way a dog's life is more important as a man, women, or child's life. now he did fund a brutal sport but did yall forget about the other people that was in it with him why arent yall taking about them they didn more then he did.. the reason why is because they are broke and yall can live with them being bums on the street. if you guys are gonna protest vick then yall need to go to the other guy's houses and jobs that were involved and protest out there too.

JRod August 31, 2009 2:52 PM

First off, Michael Vicks sentence was not stiff enough.Any animal cruelty is not stiff enough. Michael Vick should start from the bottom if given a second chance. I myself do not beleive in giving him a second chance. I have seen how those dogs have suffered, just watch Best Friends on TV and see for yourself,
For Michael's remark dated August 30, just by the way he worte his remark. He seems like fits reight in with Michael Vick kind. As for Louise she needs must not be an animal lover to feel that Michael Vick paid enough. We need to speak and protect all the animals. They have no voices, he have to be their voices.

Alice September 1, 2009 7:18 AM

I beleive as JRod. The poor animals don't have voices, and we must be their voices. Her statement regarding Michael and Louise are right on.

wilky September 1, 2009 12:58 PM

i think it's good that he's getting a second chance i beleive he sees the wrong in what he has done and i beleive the best thing to do i let him play football cause if you take football from him what's he gonna do for money.i'll tell you he will go right back to fighting dogs the way he was i think the best thing for him is to occupy his time with football

Sean September 8, 2009 5:07 PM

There is no way he should ever be allowed to play football in the NFL. How can a mere 23 months in prison make up for the lives of those dogs. I will take great pleasure in watching him get sacked this season however.

animal lover September 9, 2009 1:09 PM

you can go to hell VICK! what you did to those dogs was just cruel..

stmane September 17, 2009 5:19 PM

Vick should never play again! I can't even put in to words how horrible that man is!

Jacob September 17, 2009 11:36 PM

Vick should be locked away for a long time. What he did to those pups was cruel and horrible. What he got was a slap on the wrist. What are we teaching our children? He should be made to prove himself worthy of being allowed to be part of society again, not handed a NFL contract.

juice September 21, 2009 5:13 PM

he has paid for what he hgas done so why does it matter that he is going back to work an all of you that say he should not be alowed quit hateing ur jus mad u aint ballin so all the haters keep hatein

trayvon September 27, 2009 3:12 PM

a man that man don't care about what yall think he already got hi chance so stop hatin

deeandtysonmom27 October 22, 2009 1:36 AM

Idon't think mike vick should be able to play ball...he shows no remorse, even if he said the words I don't think they were heathfelt at all.. He had money on the brain(if he has one. He should flip burgers or some other job, If he wasn't a fb player he would not got off so easy. Most of the high paid ballplayers end up a thug and killers, so he should nener be around animals111111111111111

Theory October 26, 2009 8:50 PM

Absolutely! Maybe someone on the field will cripple Vick. The man should play Football! His sentence for animal cruelty was not justice. Football is a bunch of guys with a dead blown up pig running on each other with nails in their shoes. There is a chance he'll die out there or better. Let the man play. Let em play. please let em play.

kevisha williams November 10, 2009 2:10 PM

im glad he is back in the game. i mean every body makes mistaked but if you font give the person another chance there is no way of knowing if the person has actually changed. its life stuff happens. he is a good person who made the wrong decision and also paid his dues to society. let the man live.
