Dogs vs Cats: Who do Americans Like More?

Dogs vs Cats: Who do Americans Like More?

Who's smarter? Who's more popular? It seems like dogs and cats are always being pitted against each other.

So who does win the hearts of the most people, the canines or felines? A poll of American adults aimed to answer that very question.

A new Associated Press-Petside.com poll asked pet-owners and those without pets how much they like dogs and cats.

Participants could respond with "like a lot," "like a little," "neither like nor dislike," "dislike a little," or "dislike a lot."

While 3 out of 4 adults (74%) said they like dogs a lot, only 2 out of 5 respondents (41%) said they like cats a lot.

Only 4 percent of adults said they dislike dogs "a little" or "a lot," while more than 1-in-4 (26%) said they dislike cats "a little" or "a lot."

Of all the groups that answered, married men were the most likely to say they dislike cats.

So why the difference between love for dogs and cats? Do cats get a bad rap?

I would just like to say that cats are the purrrrrrrrrrrrfect pet. You do not have to walk them. They are cleaner than dogs by far. They are very independent You can set them up with water, food, enough to last for a week and a litter box or two and go on vcation with out having to worry about them having to be walked ect......... You can't even do that with a fish. You have to have a friend or pay a person to go feed them every day while your gone.Hell you can't even leave a plant for a week before it starts dieing. To the person that doesn't like cats but don't want to bother with the extra care and attention of a dog then I suggest the next best thing. The pet rock. The cat needs attention but the pet rock does not. I feel that the cat is the most perfect pet in the world!!!! They are free spirts like the human man and if you treat them special with lots of love, they do become little people. You just have to take time out to smell the roses and to get to know who you cat really is. A LITTLE PERSON!!!

I like both dogs and cats, but I must admit that dogs are my favorite. They are loyal and affectionate while cats are independent and will be affection only when they are ready. But at least with cats you don't have to take them outdoors to do their "business" as I do since I live in an apartment. On cold days, I wish I didn't have to take my dog out, but I still love her and will do anything I can for her to keep her comfortable and happy.

How come we never see cats doing jobs?
We see dogs sniffing for bombs, running mail in bomb fields...

Cats don't have any concern for anyone but themselves.

LOL ok thats kinda of funny except in reality your IQ just happens to be much lower then the average human which is why you assume that cats can be very docile which isn't a very attractive feature to many people if i want a companion i want one thats going to be like someone i would want as a friend if i see someone who is too themselves i will not make friends with them because they're no fun to hangout with you seem to be one of those people im sorry for you're inability to talk to other people its pretty sad

Cats are very smart and essentially take care of themselves aside from putting out food and water, and cleaning out the litter box. They can be very loving and great companions, but those who don't own cats only see the usual cautious reaction a lot of cats can have to new people. They're not unfriendly, they are just smart enough to know that not everything they meet will be friendly.

Dogs are great companions for being loyal and obedient, and dogs tend to be friendly to new people. Dogs are more needing of attention and having to be walked twice a day and needing activity makes them more difficult to care for.

Cat are the only other species besides humans who Kill for Fun.
Dogs are man's best friend. why? because you can beat the crap out of a dog and he'll still lick your face afterwards.

Parrots for the win.
Parrot companions are the most intelligent, (proven more intelligent than dogs or cats) require a high level of trust, patience and love, but once you form a bond with a parrot, it far exceeds anything I've experienced with my dogs or cats.

I love them all, and have had all as pets, but the Parrots have a special place in my heart.

wow dude parrots are BIRDBRAINS theres a reason they're called that and its not because they're intelligent

Im a dog lover and even cats mice ferrets etc are better then parrots. Parrots have no huge connection with humans they cant take any social signals they dont understand anything more then repeating what you say.

Dogs are companions who cant be replaced parrots have not made such a big contribution to our lives and our hearts its apparent why dogs won, think about all the jobs dogs preform, dalmatians fire fighters ,German Shepards police dogs, dogs have passion in what they do they will stand by your side they have courage lets see a parrot do that.

all you do is tell your parrot how your day was and he repeats exactly what you say back its a good reflection session finally somone with as sad a life as you

I have owned Both Cats and dogs all my life and I'm now 70, I really like both animals but to me dogs are the best, they are always at the door to greet when you come home. I had a beagle for 15 years and she never let me out of her sight when I was home, if I got up and went to another room the Beagle would follow me. Slept with me every night and would get under the covers on a cold night. I really miss that wonderful dog.

I now have a 7 year old Chiguagua, blue or gray color and she is great.

If dogs don't go to heaven I want to go where go.

To jim, my cat met me at the door each time I came, purring & rubbing along my leg to pick her up & play! Slept at my feet each nite, went for walks & even car rides happily! Cats can be just as social as dogs, you just need to work with them more as they tend to be very cautious of new situations. (note: all my training took 2 months to do to a 1yr cat!)

Cats are the best! My cat greets me at the door when I come home and follows me around the house. She lets me clip her nails, brush her teeth and give baths when need be. She loves people and is good with my young nieces even when they pull her tail. She is very curious and playful even at her age of 10 1/2. Dogs are nice, but require so much care.

I love my cats. I am 55 and have had at least two cats in my life ever since I was a baby. Why do I love cats? They are so sweet. When I had surgery both cats, who display sibling rivalry, slept next to me and each other to comfort me. Somehow they knew I did not feel well. I love the independence that cats exhibit but realize, they love the game of chase ultimately enjoying being caught and smothered with love and kisses. They are so easy to take care of too. They don't require walks, I don't have to pick up their poo on the lawn nor do I get spots on the lawn from urine. They prefer to find a place to do their duty when outside by digging a hole in the dirt and covering it up. They smell good. I have never petted a cats and had stinky hands afterwards. Cats don't bark loudly or make excessive noise when you are gone bothering the neighbors . Cats don't jump up on guests, lick people excessively in the face with a stinky tongue, cause bodily harm on others or hump people. If you need to go away for a weekend, just leave enough food and water and an adequate liter box. Talk about personality, they all have a unique one. Once you have created that special bond with your
cats you have found heaven on earth. As for dogs, I love all animals and they love me. My cats are special and they are God's gift to me. I hope to join all cats in heaven including lions, tigers, leopards, etc., and enjoy them throughout eternity. I just love cats!

Dog lovers are people who are needy and craves more attention, just like dogs, that's why they love them. Cat people like myself who love cats are confident, just like the cats. We give and recieve love without seeming too needy or desperate. Bottom line if you need attention, get a dog. If you want real love, get a cat.

Entirely untrue. Dogs are loyal and loving; I own 5. Not out of desperation for love, I get that from my family and my boyfriend. I prefer dogs because they respect the hand that takes care of them. Cats think they are God because thier owners bring them food. Cats, like the person who wrote the comment I'm replying to, simply seem to think they're better than the rest of the world, and that's too much attitude for me. Keep your cats lady, cause with that attidude they'll end up your only company.

Adamant dog lovers tend to be total control freaks. Adamant dog lovers tend to be insecure, power-hungry people, who value obedience and power-over others vis a vis the qualities of independence and power-with others. No serial killer has ever been a cat lover. Serial killers are terrified of losing control to the extent that they sequentially eliminate all sources of perceived threats to their delusions of grandeur/power.

I prefer cats because they're independent and don't really need you to do everything for them, plus they'll do their business in a box, whereas a dog, if left alone in the house, will just go wherever the hell they feel like it. Besides, there's nothing that's more of a turn off than a hot girl picking up a nasty turd in a bag after her dog craps on some random lawn! Cats don't stink (well their litterboxes do if you don't empty them), they don't have their tongues stupidly hanging out and they don't drool all over everything in sight.

Cats FTW!!!

I can't stand cats or their "owners". I get so sick of seeing cat paw prints on my car. If they are such great pets, why do you let them roam the neighborhood? How would cat owners like it if I let my Collies roam the neighborhood? Can I let my dogs jump on your car? People who have cats don't want the responsibility of having an animal. That's why they say that cats can clean themselves, don't need attention, and all you have to do is feed and water them. Owning a dog is a big responsibility and they become part of your family. Cat owners are lazy people. One person wrote that cats are "independent and don't really need you to do everything for them, plus they'll do their business in a box, whereas a dog, if left alone in the house, will just go wherever the hell they feel like it." Doesn't that sound like a lazy person? It sure does to me. Yeah, just leave some food and water out, along with a box to go in, lazy, lazy, lazy. Does that person ever pay attention to his cat? Oh, I forgot, they don't need attention. That sounds to me like a caged animal, how cruel! All you do is set out food for them. And if you are the typical cat owner who let's them roam the neighborhood, you don't really need to feed them because they find their own food. Cat owners say that they let them roam so that they can be free, and that they are so "independent". If that's the case, why have them as a pet? Another thing, I don't have to walk my dog; I have a fenced in yard. It's not right that there is no leash law for cats when they are such a nuisance. Cats are worthless and do not serve any purpose on this earth. Here's a scenario: A person is trying to break into a house and hears a dog bark. Do you think he still tries to break in? My dogs have stopped people from breaking in. I have come home from work to find the blinds torn down, and I'm trying to figure out why the dogs did that. The next day a detective came to my house to ask questions about the break-in next door, where they had no dogs. They had two cats!!! And every cat owner I have talked to about this say that their cat is protective of their homes. Give me a break!!!! My dogs love me unconditionally, and they also serve as home security. I am not a needy person and they are not needy. When they want attention they come up to me and I give them attention. They are "independent" and are not needy.

I've only had bad experiences with cats, so that's why I don't really care for them, besides the fact that they make me break out into hives. I have a puppy because I can't have children, she means the world to me. I personally feel that dogs have more emotions than cats do, which makes it easier for them to love so unconditionally. It's true that dogs have the ability to destroy nice furniture, but if you train them right, they can be as easy to care for as a cat. I have had dogs my whole life, which might be part of the reason I have a stronger connection to them. My first dog was half red fox, and she was the best dog I have ever had, she protected me from my abusive parents. I haven't heard of cats doing that. But I may not be looking in the right place.

Dog lovers are people that need to be needed and obeyed. They have to have someone at their beck and call who will love them no matter how rotten they are to the animal itself or other people.

Cat people are independent and appreciate a likewise animal.

In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Jerks!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now.

I have 5 cats and a dog at home and i equally love them all. What is the main reason we have pets - for companionship. If animals can be your best companion then it does not matter if you have a dog or a cat. I love animals and respect nature. I have had all kinds of pets at home and i love all of them.

I think its a sign of intelligence to behave in a manner that will yield a response that gets you what you want (food-shelter-affection). Dogs (mine) are generally friendly, loyal, fun, smart and brave. She can and does get anything and everything. With cats you get bits and pieces that might total 40 to 50% of those qualities. Seems to me...why bother having a cat....there are plenty 2-legged ones that I don't have to care for. Cat lovers say cats are intelligent because of their independent nature. I personally think its dumb to behave in a manner that would alienate the owner. I guess both are smart in their own way. Cats are just smart enough to give just enough to get what they want...that doesn't sounds like a lotta fun- I have no problem being what they are...but why would I want my pet-pal-partner behaving like a human? My dog is very sharp....she can be like a cat/human when she gets annoyed at me. I love it. But as long as I do the right thing by her...its unlimited fun and affection. In the end....I just don't see too many cats and their owners in the parks having a blast running around and enjoying their lives together. Actually none! Whats up w/ that? If you are grandma...I suppose cats are more appropriate. I ain't grandma!

I see Animals as wonderful creatures, whether they be dogs or cats, but dogs are usually preferred by those who wish to be in control, whereas cats are preferred by those who do not require control over their pets. Dogs will always follow the pack leader, so as pets this will be their owner. Cats (considered smarter than dogs by the scientific community) will learn if they please, but cannot be controlled. Both cats and dogs have been proven to bond, care about others and grieve over loss. We don't really need to compete them against each other. I've bonded with both, and think they are great gifts to humankind!

I agree with you almost 100%, Don! :) A dog'll follow his "owner" if that person asserts him/herself as alpha. Otherwise, the dog'll rule. Otherwise, I totally agree with what you've said. :)

My family had both when I was a small child, & I loved both dogs & cats as family pets. As I grew older, my preference for dogs developed & I wanted a dog for many years. When people suggested I get a cat, I always rebuffed them, saying that I wanted to have a dog because of their loyalty & for other reasons. Well, I've never had the opportunity to own a dog, for various reasons as various times in my life, but I was chosen by a cat over a year ago, & the ways having him come into my home to share it with me are countless! I'm definitely a "cat mom," showering a lot of love & spoiling my Dublin with stuff, most of which he sniffs at but doesn't play with too much. Typical! :D He'd rather play with the boxes. :D haha I do know I'd be a "dog mom" if I had a dog & would spoil that creature the same as well.

I'm totally convinced that there is a pet out there for everyone - it's just that not everyone's found his/her fit.

About allergies - some people, like one of my friends, are so allergic to specific animals (in my friend's case, cats) that even medication won't help them. She suffers if she's in a house in which a cat lives, even if the cat's been removed & the place cleaned as much as possible for a week beforehand. Most people have mild enough allergies that they could live with a creature. I do have a mild allergy to cat dander & dog dander, but I haven't had a problem with Dublin - I was told that his coat type has something to do with that. Good thing! :)

Anyway, as Don says, there's no need to compete against each other. You either love dogs more than cats, or you love cats more than dogs, or you like both, or you don't like animals. Whichever one, let's just agree to disagree on this because we each have our opinion, & animals really are a blessing to humanity. :)

I keep reading /hearing about how dogs being preferred by control freaks...i call myself an I care freak...control....I like a mix of response and independence-hence my aversion to having my dog on a leash...like i am the mechanism for her to poop...the leash only goes on in pet stores...cats owners dont require control because they dont want the responsibility of being responsible for their supposed pal....its weak, distant and a cop out.....its just a matter of how deep they want their relationship to be...i battle with my girl every day about whos the boss-and i love her independence- i have a real commited relationship unlike those independence intelligence loving(right)cat lovers ..only a cat lover wld see indifference as a sign of independence and intelligence....the world is filled w/sociopaths with those qualities....dont like them too much do ya... facing the truth would make them irrelevant....that might hurt...its called the truth//i get the appeal of having a pet that is most likely dumb because it is unable to learn that to get ...you gotta give///what can you do with a cat that you cant do with a dog...catch fleas...i know the answer...its nothing...thats what cats are good for...doing nothing-no demands for attention...to play ...for you to take responsibility....must be real easy to for those who somehow want the title ...but not the commitment...as i always say...how much fun can the cat lover have without the great experience of running around in the park and playing...if it isnt about fun w/ a pet....what is it about//i apologise to cat lovers who honestly do not realize they are really dog lovers and dont know it....i like cats....esp when young....they act like dogs

Although i love both animals, I have to say I like cats best. I had a best fury friend who passed away Dec. 30th, 2008. That day my heart broke into a million pieces. His name was Domino Dax, Daxi baby to me as well Daxi baby honey kitty cat. It's been over a year now and miss him. Today, I was telling a dear friend about him and before I knew it I was crying. My heart is mending, but it will never be the same. I would like to tell you about him: In January 2001 my son and I went to a no-kill policy pet shelter intending to come home with a calico, a female for our other female cat. Instead we came home with a big black male!! Far cry from what we wanted. For some reason I kept coming back to him!!, eight times I think it was, something was telling me to take him...and so I did. I didn't regret that decision. He would greet me at the door when I came home from work and wherever. He slept with me and came to bed no matter what time I would go. He would lay down on command and sit when asked to. He followed me wherever he could even to the biffy!! I would call him my puppy cat! He loved to give love, whoever came in the door got his special attention but not all people appreciated that but that's okay. I now have a special furry angel!!!When a cat bonds with their human friend they seem to have an innate sense when it comes to their human friends' feelings. I could go on some more but I think I should quit. Yes, I am definitely a cat person.

I prefer cats to dogs. My family has always had cats since I was a little kid. They are easier to take care of and require less work than a dog. It pains me to see and hear about the way people treat cats. I have two cats right now one will be 14 in May and the other will be 3 in June. I guess people don't understand that cats are a more independent animal, but still make a wonderful pet. Connie Wilson

first off; it is the ground she walks on that i worship(worship is not he word i would use...i prefer...adore)you don't seem to be reading what i write...or getting it///there is nothing I wouldn't do for my dog...she has the insurance...not me....she has a closet full of treats and toys...she has more freedom than any dog i have seen...i have never seen/heard her growl or be negative towards any one ...ever(loves the mailman)except one time.....she bit the hand of someone who was attacking a pregnant friend of mine-that is it! she loves everyone...believe me-it seems she loves people as much as i love dogs///for me it is an honor to be her pal...i wish i had more people friends who had just a couple of her qualities....so i really dont get how you come to a total opposite conclusion of what our relationship is.....I just want her to be happy..i will forever be giving it all to her...but you are right about 1 thing=the notion of unconditional love///i wouldnt love her if she were not what makes me feel love for her...so the condition is for her to be her.....and i do believe you are in denial if you think it is different for you...either that or if you can love something that does nothing and still gets your love...then what is your love worth that it is so easily had...you know you love your cat because of what makes your cat what it is..whatever that is...i love that my dog loves me...but her love for me is icing on the cake...i love what she is...the way she is..i guess those are my conditions......1 more thing..dont you think that if cats were bigger; they would be far more fierce killers of people than dogs... they are natural killers...kill for sport...kill birds...mice..etc....all things smaller it seems...i bet they would love to kill people...why not-killing is sport to them...you probably think its cute when they kill and leave their victims for you as gifts....if and when dogs kill people...usually its because a human mistreated them...certainly not for sport...how would you like to have a very big cat with big claws as your pet...pretty sure one day you would be crying out for help...and it would come from a dog if it were able to... now try to just understand the simplicity of what I wrote ...bec up to now ...you havent

Well, i love dogs and cats like crazy! but i'd say that alot of people don't like cats becuz they "scratch" and can be nasty, only if u raise it wrong, hey! if u raise a dog wrong it could kill someone when it's a an adult. Dog bites are worse than cat scratches and they only bite and scratch becuz of self-defense [if they think ur hurting them] or territorial reasons. But me personally, i like dogs better, i do absolutely love cats i wanna smack people off the face of the earth that don't lol but dogs are just my passion. there sweet loving caring adoribleness everything about them, i think the world's ugliest dog is unbelievebly adorible lol! XD whenever i see a dog a light just shines and sparkles a glare of admiration from the sun reflected in my eyes..... x3 and my heart soars through a world of furry, fluffy, cuddly cozy warmth in the love of dogs. i love dogs. lol dogs tigers and wolves are my fave animals. i love dogs there so sweet, they are alot of care but they need more attention, more love, u can cuddle with them, play with them, they need love and attention. there like babies only not as challenging, there little kids, the cry when there hurt or want attention, they get hungry they need the energy that there full of and want to play all the time there so sweet and loving. not saying cats arent but they dont like it if u smother them too much, dogs and cats are both beatifully wonderful pets, and my friend has 2 cats and a dog they dont fight ok one orange cat named patrick he's a few years old, a black cat named lily still a growing kitten [pretty much an adult already] and bella the white dog bella doesn't like patrick, but he's an outdoor cat he's always outside the family never sees him, he comes in for food and goes back out he doesn't like to be held but he is such a sweet little thing but he doesnt like to cuddle, thats the thing i dislike about cats, there so cute and u love them so much u just want to love them and when they reject ur snuggles and hugs u feel so heartbroken! lol so anyway bella she absolutely loves lily, there always running playing together it's too cute. When im older i will have a house filled with dogs so many, countless......lol and i'll try to get like 7 cats maybe more.....u see cats and dogs dont hate eachother it's animal nature some animals are enimies so will love eachother it depends on the personality same with people we get along with our friends and some people we hate. Example there are 4 groups of people the 1st is boys who are like average the 2nd is girls who are average the 3rd is guys who are full of themself and the 4th is snobby girls. Okay so theres one girl from the average pile [lol] who says "i hate snobby girls i hate stupid guys that are full of themself" but then theres one guy who's really full of himself that she really gets along with and enjoys being around and then theres a snobby girl who is actually really nice to her and becomes her best friend! same with dogs and cats some dogs like one cat and hate another. some cats hate one dog but is best friends with the other. They live in harmony! love love love JUST LOVE!!! LOL LOVE THE WORLD!!! LOVE EVERYTHING LOVE DOGS AND CATS NOT ONE IS BETTER THEN THE OTHER GOD INTENDED IT TO BE THAT WAY FOR US TO LOVE SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ABILITY TO LOVE AND LOVE EVERYTHING! AND EVERYONE! XD FEEL THE LOVE LOVE DOGS LOVE CATS LOVE PEOPLE LOVE ANIMALS LOVE THE WORLD! if u understand a person, u might like them. if bob the cat understands kiki the dog he might like her too. Love...

I think most people are dog lovers because they are lazier and do not have the patience it takes to train a cat to be a good pet. Dogs are people pleasers, but cats don't do things just because we think they should. Cats demand respect, dogs demand attention.

Dogs are also more social and will go to almost anyone, if not trained to be vicious by their owner(s). Cats, however, I have always noticed are more loyal, and stranger-shy, giving them a rep. of being unfriendly. They just like who they grew up with. No offense, but I wouldn't want to be pet by strange people either if I were a pet. I didn't sign up to be a play toy.

But I have multiple cats and am a cat-lover to the end. They, in my opinion, are more intelligent, or witty, I believe, is a better word. My cats do not scratch or bite, and they go into their carrier when called, come when called, and can even be taught to walk on leashes like dogs, yet are not as needy as dogs. With that said, to me, cats are absolutely the perfect pet.

After reading a bunch of these comments, I'm wondering why people feel the need to be pretty nasty while criticizing other people for liking one pet over another. For the majority of people (as far as I'm concerned) if you like dogs, it doesn't mean you're an attention seeker or and if you like cats, you're lazy. It just means you prefer one type of animal over another to fit your lifestyle. I'm more of a cat person myself but I have both cats and dogs. I love them all, regardless.

People on this site are so immature, and are obviously trolling. I own a cat, I like cats. My room mates dog chewed up EVERYTHING. Every last pair of shoes I owned, a spatula, a razor, ate an entire jar of peanuts, a jar of GREASE, which of course gave her diarrhea and she went in the apartment. Not to mention when she gets scared she PEES.... BUT I don't blame the dog. The owner of the dog did not have enough time to spend with her dog to properly train her and give her the attention she deserved. I knew if I got a dog it would be much the same situation, so I got a cat. She is independent and likes plenty of alone time, but when I have time to spend with her she is very affectionate. She loves to play, especially with laser pointers, and has never destroyed anything of mine. When you don't have enough time to dedicate to a dog, a cat is the perfect choice.

I have always had cats, I adore cats of all sizes, I like dogs well enough but I am ALLERGIC to them, cannot abide their barking and whining, do not enjoy walking in hail storms/snow/rain etc so cats are ideal for me. I am married, strangely enough to my 'husband' who also loves cats and also cannot abide barking, whining and walking in hail storms. One of the reasons I dislike dogs as pets is because of their insane loyalty to owners who ill-treat them. Dogs are dumb, cats would not be so stupid. I actually live in the UK where we have the bizarre idea that cats (and sometimes dogs) can actually be allowed to roam free outside! They don't use litter trays because they can go outside (although some people complain that their neighbour's cats dig up their flowers....oh dear!). My cats would not dream of messing up the house but I have seen plenty of dogs who chew everything they can get their teeth on, dig holes in the lawn, and then deposit their waste on top of the remaining lawn (how delightful). Cats rule, dog owners drool!

They pollute and destroy the planet giving nothing in return (in the majority) so what are humans for? Oh, let me guess, humans are for looking after dogs.....cats don't need them, because they can look after themselves! All animals are precious (rats included, they clean up all the rubbish than mankind leaves everywhere!)

I dislike dogs. Strongly dislike. I really do. I find them needy, unclean, bothersome and over-hyped. Dog owners tend to be the worst too; they are usually very ignorant of cats and say silly things like cats can't be trained (they can, it's a different kind of training then dogs though) don't rescue people (there are known cases of cats saving people by waking them up during a fire, for instance) and that they do nothing (they are just as affectionate, and willing to do jobs for their human companions as dogs are - you just see the way dogs work and think cats should do the same. they can't. they're two different species. Like saying dolphins should act like humans). People allergic to cats are allergic to the genetics of a cat: this means that you can train your immune sustem to accecpt a specific cat's DNA (found in saliva) and within weeks stop being allergic. Unless you're allergic to the fur, which means you'd be allergic to dogs as well. But most dog lovers don't cut cats any slack. The fact that there are people out there who say they love dogs and dislike cats "a lot" speaks volumes about their empathy. Never trust someone who doesn't like cats it means they lack empathy.

I grew up with a dogs so when I was growing up I hated cats. I disliked them for all the reasons people have listed already. It wasn't until I got to college and I agreed (hesitantly) to look after my friends cat for the summer that all my ideas of what a cat was supposed to be completely changed. Sure some of it is true. They are extremely independent creatures but they are also extremely affectionate and that's exactly what I love about them. When my friend got back and wanted his cat back, I really wanted to keep her for myself and was so sad. Since then I've always had at least two cats and that will never change. I still like dogs but I'm also a neat freak and cats are so much cleaner and easier to take care of for those who have busy lifestyles.

I definitely and honestly am a cat lover. I have the cuttiest 1 year old cat named Cookie, and my sister brought her home while she was outside following her around. Yes,she was a stray cat. Very friendly, stray cat I have ever seen. I didn't like her that much at first because I have extremely bad cat allergies so I did not even pay a bit attention to her. Then after a month, when we moved to a apartment, ever since then I started paying a little attention on her and now she is my life. I take care of her with all my heart everyday and its been only 3 months ever since we had her,but without her in my life I would be totally miserable. I love her with all my heart and that is never gonna change. It seems like she chose me,because she follows me around everywhere and licks me and purrs and even talks with me. Cats are sciencetifically smarter then dogs, and I agree. I thought her how to sit today and she learned it in one minute. Literally,a minute. She is very different, unique and smart. She chose me and I chose her. I do not know what my life would be like without her. Sure dogs are really cute, but I prefer cats over them.

I love both my cat and my dog. Both are loyal, but in different ways. My dog's loyalty is such that he would run to anyone flourishing a piece of bacon - but he'd come right back to me. My cat would never take food from anyone's hand but mine and she returns the favor with occassional "hunting gifts". My dog is friendly and affable with everyone, but I'm the only human that my cat shows affection toward. I love both my pets, and, remarkably, they are best friends with eachother too - they groom eachother and sleep together. They each love in their own, unique way and I love them!
