106 Service Tasks The Puppies Learn Part 1

The puppies trained in the program have to assist their disabled owners in all facets of their lives. Because of this, the puppies must master 106 service tasks. These duties range from removing shoes and socks, to retrieving a soda from the refrigerator, to dialing 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. See the list below for a full catalog of the amazing tasks they learn!

RETRIEVE-BASED TASKS

1. Bring portable phone to any room in house

2. Bring in groceries - up to 10 canvas bags

3. Unload suitable grocery items from canvas sacks

4.Fetch a beverage from a refrigerator or cupboard

5.Fetch food bowl(s)

6. Pick up dropped items like coins, keys etc., in any location

7. Bring laid out clothes, shoes, or slippers to assist with dressing

8. Unload towels, other items from dryer

9. Retrieve purse from hall, desk, dresser or back of van

10. Assist to tidy house or yard - pickup, carry, deposit designated items

11. Fetch basket with medication and/or beverage from cupboard

12. Seek and find teamwork - direct the dog with hand signals, vocal cues to: retrieve an unfamiliar object out of partner's reach locate TV remote control select one of several VCR tapes atop TV cabinet, other surfaces

13. Remove VCR tape from machine after eject button pushed

14. Use target stick to locate and retrieve an indicated item off shelves in stores retrieve one pair of shoes from a dozen in closet

15. Use laser pointer to target an item to be retrieved

16. Drag cane from its customary location to another room|

17. Pick up and return cane if falls off back of wheelchair

18. Pickup or fetch Canadian crutches from customary location

19. Drag walker back to partner

20. Fetch wheelchair when out of reach

CARRYING-BASED TASKS (non-retrieval)

21. Move bucket from one location to another, indoors and outdoors

22. Lug a basket of items around the house

23. Transport items downstairs or upstairs to a specific location

24. Carry item(s) from the partner to a care-giver or family member in another room

25. Send the dog to obtain food or other item from a care-giver and return with it.

26. Dog carries a prearranged object to care-giver as a signal help is needed

27. Carry items following a partner using a walker, other mobility aids

28. Pay for purchases at high counters

29. Transfer merchandise in bag from a clerk to a wheelchair user's lap

30. Carry mail or newspaper into the house

This is just amazing. Makes me wonder whether the dogs and vets require continuing training. Some of these tasks are very complicated. It would be so interesting to see how the training is done with the dogs.
