How you decide if a dog is going to be a "stander" or a "jumper"? Unless I have strong leanings, I usually ask my client if they have an idea of a pose they are interested in. I love to depict poses that are action oriented since the art of the carousel is all about movement, but there are some dogs that are more stoic in nature and work well in a typical stacked show pose with four feet on the floor.
I had a client who wanted both of her dogs as rockers, but I lobbied hard for her to allow me to put them both on one stand as if they were racing each other. Her male, Joshua, loved to do agility jumps and he also loved to follow around the female, Petal, everywhere. So I did a drawing with Josh leaping behind Petal--it was the quintessential carousel piece and I'm so glad she went for it.
