Search and rescue efforts that were born from the September 11th attacks started with the intention of finding survivors. Miraculously, some were found amidst the fallen rubble. Not long after, though, the efforts of the mission shifted from rescue to recovery, as the chances of finding survivors continued to slim. Dogs were still a vital part of the operation, and were used to find remains throughout Ground Zero. Their assistance to rescuers helped identify many of the fallen at Ground Zero, and provided a clarity and conclusion for family members that they otherwise would not have had. As Nona Kilgore Bauer wrote in her book Dog Heroes of September 11th: A Tribute to America's Search and Rescue Dogs, "Without their contribution, hundreds of victims' families would not have found the peace that comes with the return of a family member or beloved friend."
