The Schipperke has roots extending to the 1600s in Belgium. The dog is a descendant of a sheepdog called the Leauvenaar, and it is from this dog that the Schipperke attained its watchdog nature. The first Schipperke was imported to the United States in 1888, but there was little interest in the dog until around 1929, when fanciers founded the first club for the dog.
