Whimsical ears are this breed’s most notable trait. Their ears are large, with a smooth curl and stand high up on their adorable heads. There is a slant to their walnut-shaped eyes. These are the polar opposite of an aloof cat. American Curls love to nuzzle and pat faces, they’re also curious, playful, energetic, and rather chatty. Curls’ coos sound like a vibrating flutter—unless it’s time to eat! That’s when they sure know how to speak up.
Fun Fact: At birth, American Curl kittens look like any other kitten, but during their first week of life their ears grow firmer and begin to plump up and curve back. The degree of the curl can change dramatically over a short time—anywhere from 90 to 180 degrees. This unusual, curly-eared trait is caused by a spontaneous inherited dominant gene.
