Photos: Behind the Scenes at Puppy Bowl IX

Get ready to grab the chips and commandeer the remote because Puppy Bowl will return for its ninth year on Superbowl Sunday. This year viewers who prefer the cuddly canine version of football will witness a menagerie of cuteness, including hedgehog cheerleaders, a kitty halftime show, a hamster-piloted blimp, and 63 puppy stars recruited from shelters across the country. Petside was on the sidelines to catch a behind-the-scenes look during the filming of this year's special.

Puppy Bowl airs Sunday February 3 at 3pm on Animal Planet, with repeat showings throughout the day.

The Puppy Bowl is taped in October, many months before it actually airs on Super Bowl Sunday. You can be sure that the puppies you see playing in the "Bowl" are already living in their forever homes. Just don't forget the millions of puppies that ARE available from rescues and shelters all over the United States -- not to mention the adult and senior dogs that are, in many ways, a much easier "lift" than adding a puppy to your family. And! Big Puppy Ups to the Puppy Bowl for including, in greater numbers, pit bull mix puppies. That's perhaps a more accurate representation of the kind of dogs in our shelters. These are wonderful family pets and deserving of good homes. CharlieDog and Friends www.charliedogandfriends.com

This is such a awesome superbowl. I hope that all of the Dogs get adopted and bring focus to shelters so people will adopt from the shelters

Definitely better than the Super Bowl, I can't help but wonder how many viewers they would have if it wasn't the biggest commercial day of the year. I honestly wonder what percentage watches to see the ads and Puppy Bowl and don't give a hoot about the game.

The Puppy Bowl is usually better than the Supper Bowl. I hope it generates a lot of adoptions and interest in shelters.

Best wishes to all participants. May it be a winning game for all and may each of you find a forever home.
