Labrador Retriever Puppy Herbie Gets Treatment for Leptospirosis
Herbie was three months old and with his owners for only three weeks when he became ill with leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that damages the kidneys, liver and lungs.
He had a 10% chance of survival, but the Animal Medical Center’s Critical Care and Emergency Service quickly began administering treatment. Herbie underwent hemodialysis to replace the normal function of his kidneys and an emergency surgery to correct an intestinal problem that had developed as a result of his symptoms. He also received a blood transfusion provided by one of the dogs owned by a veterinarian at AMC.
Herbie spent three weeks recovering in the ICU post-surgery, with daily visits from his owners and unlimited attention from the AMC staff (including a special homemade chicken recipe to renew his interest in food made by one of the veterinarians). That type of treatment is priceless.
Herbie now has fully recovered and his family reports that he loves chasing balls around the kitchen, unrolling the toilet paper, and showing off his smarts while learning new tricks.
