Adorable and Adoptable Deaf Dogs

Each year, the last full week in September marks Deaf Pets Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness about hearing loss and prove that deafness should not deter adoption. This year, Deaf Pets Awareness Week comes on the heels of Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week and also happens to coincide with National Dog Week, a week dedicated to celebrating dogs for all they do for humans. In honor of these occasions, we've compiled a slideshow of adorable and adoptable deaf dogs. Though they may be considered less adoptable, they are certainly no less lovable!

We adopted a deaf Dalmation (seems to be really prevelant in the breed) many years ago, and he quickly became a favorite of kids everywhere and a loyal family member to the end, as we lost him a few years back. We communicated thorough both sign language- yes, he understood a few commands! And through floor vibrations. He understood that the stronger the foot tap or stomp, the more he needed to pay attention. We had to keep him fenced because he LOVED to run- in a straight line! So chasing after him became an adventure. We miss him and think of him often.

While looking at montana shelter listings for a mature dog to be a companion to my 3 year old Aussie mix, I found a listing for a beautiful 8 month old deaf Aussie with vision issues. Thinkig I must be nuts (not what I was looking for) I inquired...4 years later I have been blessed having this loving, independent, makes me smile every day animal.
