The Bergamasco is a medium to large-sized dog breed with a thick wooly coat made up of felt-like mats. Even though it might seem like their unique coat would need extensive grooming, the Bergamasco only needs about 1-3 baths per year!
This sheepdog has a natural protective instinct and a strong desire to please its owner because of its roots as a guard dog. Although they originated in present-day Iran, when shepherds emigrated to the Italian Alps, their faithful dogs came with them where an Italian breeder named Dr. Maria Andreoli kept the breed alive even when they were in danger of extinction!
