Debra’s 9 ½ year old son Scott has special needs exhibiting characteristics of ADHD and Aspergers syndrome, but she says through fostering and working at adoption events with Last Chance Animal Rescue, her son learned about selfless love and animal welfare issues.
She says, “Scott has learned more about the human-animal bond through meeting hundreds of dogs and fostering 70 homeless animals. He has played with the dogs, bathed and groomed them, and helped explain their traits and personalities to prospective adopters.”
One of the two fosters the Engelhardts kept was formerly abused and continues to require patience. Through the experience of helping the dog adjust, Debra says Scott has “developed empathy, patience, sensitivity, and compassion. This endeavor has been a solidifying family experience.”
