Despite its name, the Chinese Crested is believed to have originated in Africa, as descendants of hairless dogs. The breed was dubbed ‘Chinese’ due to the great favoritism of the breed seen within China among merchants and sailors who traded the dogs in ports. The Chinese decided to selectively breed the pooch to be smaller, and its trade flourished as early as the 1500s.
