Photos: 10 Breed Specific Rescues

The Westminster Dog Show is coming up on February 11-12 and many dog lovers from around the world will be glued to our television to see our favorite breed competing for Best in Show.

If you’ve always dreamed of owning a purebred dog, but think you could not get one because of the cost or because you believe in the motto, “Adopt, don’t Shop,” think again.

There are two ways you can adopt a purebred, either by choosing one of the estimated 30 percent of purebreds in shelters, or through a breed specific rescue near you.

Breed specific rescues typically deal in one or maybe two related breeds and often times, the founders of the rescues are life-long owners of the breed, and some have been involved in the show circuit, so they know the breed very well.

Petside.com reached out to 10 various breed specific rescues across the country to talk about their dogs and breeds. To find a breed specific rescue near you, go to Petfinder.com, or ask around the pet community in your area, such as veterinarians, shelters and pet supply stores.

We certainly took a liking to Dachshunds. They are easily trained, but also easily distracted. They are very protective, which accounts for some of the distraction. We have 4 !

I knew about Pit Bulls and Dobermans, but I had no idea that there were so many Bichon Frises in shelters.

There are so many local rescues too I've noticed. How do you know if it's a good organization?
