The roots of the Egyptian Mau extend all the way back to ancient Egypt, where the cat is clearly identified in the artwork of the time period. Many experts believe that breed was domesticated by Egyptians from a spotted supspecies of African Wild Cat. The Mau also played a role a role in this culture, appearing in the religion, mythology, and everyday life of Egyptians. The cat breed's existence in North America is traced back to 1956, when the cat was brought over by exiled Russian princess Nathalie Troubetskoy.
