Three hundred feral cats have Melya Kaplan to thank.
The Los Angeles flower markets were overrun with rodents in 1999 and regular chemical sprayings to control them were affecting both the health of the employees and the environment.
Until Kaplan came along. Horrified, she offered to bring in three feral cats to help control the problem and since 1999, there have been no more rats.
In the past 12 years, Kaplan, the founder and executive director of L.A.-based Voice for the Animals Foundation (VFTA) has placed 300 feral cats all over the city to control the rat problems.
“We only use feral cats,” Kaplan says. “They are cats that would be killed at the shelter because they’re ‘wild cats’ because they never had human contact or were abandoned by their owners and they don’t trust humans any more. This is a win-win situation because we save them from being killed, and because the cats don’t kill the rats—it’s the smell of a topline predator that sends the rats away.”
And of course, humans aren’t affected by chemical sprayings, she adds.
