Thousands of pets in Japan owe their lives to Sister Michael Marie of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Clarksburg, Ohio.
Following the Japanese tsunami in March this year, the nun traveled four times to stricken areas to search for abandoned or lost animals—cats, dogs, chickens, goats and cows.
“So many people were evacuated on very short notice so they just left some food out for their animals, thinking they would soon be back,” says the sister. “Months later people were still trying to find a way to find their animals.”
The owners were very grateful she says.
“It’s an important part of recovery for the people who are affected by the disaster. Once they know their animals are taken care of, they can concentrate on getting the rest of their lives back in order.”
This 36-year-old nun has always felt a calling towards animals and worked as a veterinary technician before entering her convent.
