Cat lovers were dealt a blow this year when Lillian Jackson Braun died at the age of 97. The author of The Cat Who … books, including The Cat Who Turned On and Off and The Cat Who Smelled a Rat, penned 29 novels starring Jim Qwilleran and his feline sidekick, Koko, a Siamese shamus, along with Koko’s own sidekick, YumYum.
Jackson Braun wrote the novels over a span of 40 years—1966 to 2007—all of them on a typewriter, since she was an admitted hater of technology.
Born Lillian Jackson in 1913, in Willimansett, Massachusetts, the author worked as an advertising copywriter and in public relations before becoming a writer and editor at The Detroit Free Press.
What we love most about Jackson Braun was her innate appreciation of cats, and her ability to give cat lovers something wonderful to do with their feline companions year after year: read a great book.
