This year Melanie Sue Bowles celebrated her 20th anniversary of caring for abandoned and neglected horses. In 1991 she established Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary in Mena, Arkansas, with her husband Jim, and since then she has helped more than 400 horses. Many of the animals she’s taken in and cared for for the remainder of their lives.
“The most disturbing thing we deal with is neglect and cruelty,” says Bowles, adding that she sheds lots of tears due to her work.
But she can handle it, she explains.
“I think the reason we’ve lasted so long is I’m good at focusing on the here and now and the fact that the horses are safe. I look towards the future and don’t dwell on where they came from. I put my energy into making it right rather than trying to figure out why evil happens in the world.”
Bowles has also written three books to illustrate the plight of horses, as well as the stray and abandoned dogs the sanctuary takes in. The third of these books, The Dogs of Proud Spirit, was published this year.
