Pigs of Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary

Melanie Sue Bowles started the Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary 21 years ago, but it wasn’t just the neglected and abandoned horses that found a safe haven at the Sanctuary. Over the years, Melanie and her husband Jim Bowles have opened their hearts and doors to several cats, pigs, dogs and donkeys. In this slideshow, you will meet the two latest additions to the Proud Spirit family: pigs named Mimi and Nina.

You could win a copy of Melanie's book, The Horses of Proud Spirit! Just leave a comment on the slideshow below for your chance to win. Click here for official rules.

pigs make wonderful pets, they are more like kids, very smart, very emotional, sometimes stubborn, playful and except for the ones who like to root in the year very neat, they are litterbox trainable or choose a spot

This is a view of the world where each of us regardless of our species is held equally loveable.

Thank you, Melanie and Jim, for providing refuge to so many animals and for spreading the word that farm animals—with their intelligence and individual personalities—deserve far more respect from humans.

I do not want to enter the contest as I have all of Melanie's books and to say I cherish them is an understatement. Just wanted to to tell everyone if you read her books you will not be sorry. They are wonderful. I can't wait until she writes another that includes the piggies!

I love your photos. You have a wonderful place. Can you still hold Mimi like in photo 5? Thank you for saving all these sweet animals but you might need some goats too. Pigs and goats are smart and wonderful animals.
