Alaskan Malamute

All American Dog Breeds: A northwestern Alaska Eskimo tribe created the Alaskan Malamute breed, which spread many miles southward by the end of the 19th century.

Alaskan gold rush prospectors found this American dog breed, the Malamute, to be superior sled dogs.

In fact, Balto, the dog who headed a team of Siberian huskies delivering a diphtheria vaccine to Nome, Alaska, was an Alaskan Malamute. His exploits have been the subject of books and movies, and the route is retraced each year with the running of the Iditarod sled dog race.
