Hotel Monaco: David Phelps
Hotel Monaco, Alexandria, VA
The Civil War was such an emotional time in our nation’s history, most of the places connected to it have claimed a haunting at one time or another, even the pet friendly Hotel Monaco.
The hotel was once a tavern and inn named the Marshall House. James Jackson, a staunch supporter of the Confederacy, would hoist the Confederate flag each morning, in full view of President Lincoln at the White House.
When the President asked Lt. (Elmer) Ellsworth to overtake the inn and secure Alexandria, Jackson reportedly shot Ellsworth on the stairs of the inn, killing him. Ellsworth’s men then killed Jackson. These two casualties of the war are said to have never left the inn.
Management said the hotel has experienced strange occurrences at least dating back to 1972. Ran by Kimpton Hotels, the hotel fittingly hosts a doggy costume contest each year. This year the contest date is October 27.
