Fourteen-year-old Mimi Ausland has set out to persuade President Obama to officially declare a National Adopt a Shelter Pet day by sending more than 320,000 letters in support of the idea to the White House. She hopes to find out soon if a presidential proclamation is made.
Ausland has already made it her mission in life to help homeless animals. In 2008 she started Freekibble.com and Freekibblekat.com where readers answer daily trivia questions and, right or wrong, ten pieces of kibble are donated to needy dogs and cats. So far, more than 300 tons of pet food has been sent to shelters, rescues and food-banks nationwide.
After graduating from school the teenager would like to open an animal shelter that cares for all sorts of critters -- rabbits, horses, rodents, farm animals and, of course, dogs and cats. "Owning an animal sanctuary is for sure my dream job," she says.
