If your child has an interest in the exotics, don't be so quick to shoot down the idea of having a snake as a starter pet. When deciding upon snakes as your child's first pet, it's important to choose the right type.
It would be an obvious mistake to choose a snake that could become large, is a constrictor or is potentially venomous and aggressive. Rather, try a snake breed that is good for beginners, such as Corn Snakes, King and Milk Snakes, or Ball Pythons. These snakes are relatively docile and in turn easy to care for. They do not necessarily require special housing, but they do require feeding of meat, most likely mice.
