    Before You Got Your Puppy

    Puppies need to stay with their mother and littermates until they are seven or eight weeks old. Puppies this young need their mother for early nurturing, and their littermates for learning both how to relate to other dogs and to hold back their biting.

    For the first two weeks of life, a puppy's eyes and ears are closed. They can still hear and sense light, though, and they can find their mother by scent. At this age, puppies mostly sleep and nurse.

    Puppies start to play by two weeks of age, and their puppy teeth start to come in by three weeks of age. For the first three weeks, most puppies prefer to be with their mom. But by four weeks old, they start to enjoy being with their littermates. At five weeks old, puppies are able to learn simple commands and they can tell people apart.

    By seven or eight weeks of age, they're ready to go home with their new family.

    Puppies absorb a lot of information about socialization between one and seven weeks of age. They learn about touch, behavioral boundaries and dominance from their mother and siblings, and they learn about social interactions with humans.

    As early as one week of age, puppies start learning socialization rules from their mother. Puppies that nurse too hard or are too rough with their siblings are met with soft growls and nips from their mother. Their mother's constant grooming and nuzzling teaches puppies that touch is a social interaction. Siblings learn about rivalry and dominance while they are nursing and during playful wrestling matches.

    At this young age, puppies learn to recognize human voices and touch. This period of socialization is especially important for a puppy's future social life with people.

    Health and Veterinary Care

    Nursing
    During the first weeks of life, puppies receive all of the nutrition they need from their mother's milk. The first milk that is produced after puppies are born is called colostrum, and it contains important antibodies that will help protect the puppies against diseases while their immune systems are still immature.

    Milk is a nutritionally complete diet, and puppies will nurse exclusively for the first few weeks. They should be encouraged to nurse as frequently as possible -- every couple of hours during the first week and then three or four times a day thereafter. Most puppies will start eating solid or semisolid food at approximately three weeks, and by five weeks their diet should consist primarily of solid food and very little milk from their mother.

    Weaning should be completed by six to seven weeks of age, as most mother's milk production has significantly declined by this time.

    A Mother's Ability to Nurse and When to Wean
    Newborn puppies normally suckle immediately after birth and then every few hours after that. By the time puppies are 12 hours old, their stomachs can no longer absorb antibodies from their mother's colostrum.

    Sometimes a mother is unable to nurse her puppies, whether it's because she doesn't have enough milk, has mastitis, or has died. Another nursing mother may be willing to adopt the puppies, or they may need to be fed with a bottle or tube. Dog milk is much higher in protein and fat and lower in lactose than goat or cow milk, so puppies will do the best on puppy-milk replacement formula.

    If a puppy is sick or chilled, their body temperature may drop and they won't nurse. Chilled puppies can die from nursing, so they should never be fed until warmed. A chilled puppy may still feel warm to the touch, so the best way to determine if they are chilled is to touch their tongue to see if it is cold. The easiest way to warm a chilled puppy is to hold them under your shirt against your body.

    Most puppies become interested in eating solid food by three weeks of age. Some mothers start their puppies off on regurgitated food, but most breeders prefer puppy food blended into gruel.

    During their first attempts to eat real food, most puppies will walk through it, tumble into it and generally wear more than they eat. But within a few days, they will be splitting their intake between nursing and eating. Their mother will start weaning them soon, even though they'll still try to steal a sip when they can. It's typical for puppies to nurse until they're six or seven weeks of age.

    puppies are the best thing in the world to me.I am only 11 years old and I would like to be a vetranarin when I grow up.But i dont know ecause when they die I feel like its my fault if I dont save them.So whats the use of being a vet if you dont always know 100 and 10 percent that your going to save them.So just to see all of your puppies so hap and proud makes me want to belive that there ae people in the world that rely care for animals as much as me. hopefully one day my meant to be puppy will run into my arms.     Name it cuddles, prince, caramel, candy, fudge, choco, or any name you think would suit the pup. Chihuahuas usually respond to names with "e" sound though.

    got my chocolate lab 3 days ago. hes 6 weeks old. i named him butkus, after my favorite football player and favorite movie rocky. im 38 yrs old and hav 2 boys that live mostly with their mom. i miss them often. i get them every other weekend but wish i had them more. anyways, i got butkus and immediately fell in love with this pup-hes awesome! i'm just tryin to get him trained. potty training starts tonite when i get home. any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. everyone should own a puppy sometime in their life. and butkus feels like a 3rd son to me-almost.

    Your puppy is supposed to stay with its mom until its 8 weeks. The mom teaches it how not to bite and manners when it plays with other dogs. My puppy is 5 weeks old an i recently learned this. I may have to give her back for 3 more weeks. I wish I knew before i got her. but some good training tips are when your puppy needs the bathroom, he will start sniffing the ground, and walking around in circles. this is a good sign to pick up your puppy and go outside. when he uses the bathroom outside praise him and give him treats. If he does it inside and you don't catch him in the act don't punish him, he won't remember.

    when you get a dog, its better to get them when they are puppies... the reason why i say that is because they get to know you better and they listen to you... and the love will be pure between best friends... wheni got my puppy nieve i wanted to see the mother when she was pregnant and i did... i helped her give birth, and the puppy that came out was nieve. the cutest whitest little angel i have ever seen. so now you have a thought about how to have a puppy right.

    I had a chow chow but my dad sent her away because she was digging in our backyard andi had a shihtzu but he ran away we must've left the door open whoops!and then when i was asleep my uncle surprised me as a puppy it was a yorkie but the sad part is that it died when she was only 8 weeks she hasn't stayed with her mother that long i only kept her for a few weeks. im so sad but i am getting another yorkie and check out my website called lorinspuppies.webs.com lorin

    Literally, my Lilly just had pups!! She's a Russell-Rat Terrier and she had six pups, with one not making it. She had a quick delivery session with what appears to be no complications as of now. She's a great mom, especially for being extremely young. The pups look like "itty-bitty moo cows". So Cute!!!!!!!

    I have an adorable 2 year-old dog named Lola. She is a Golden Retriever/Siberian Husky mix. She is a gold color and has the intelligence of a golden and the fur, paws,and nose of a husky. She's so sweet,but people think she's mean just because she is big and has a deep loud bark. I know this message is long but I thought should share this info.

    hey everyone had a quick question got a newborn puppy that my female had and she's not nursing it the pup looks healthy im just wondering wat milk would be the best for him if he cant get his moms milk ive been useing powdered goats milk with some colostrum to mix to give it a lil extra since he didnt get it from the mom just wondering if there was anything better or if anyone had any ideas..thanx ahead of time and hope to hear back from someone soon..

    I am a single mom And i am looking for akita puppy for my three grandson that a am adopting. they would be so happy to have a dog to play with and love.They have had a rough time and need aloyal friend to spend time with a use up some of their energy.
