Cats and Water: Are they really enemies?

Dispelling ancient myths is one of my favorite hobbies. I especially love to debunk those urban legends that have been passed down from generation to generation that pertain to cats. Those as "Men don't like cats", and "Cats are sneaky" are some of my all time favorites.
I also love watching cat related videos which are both humorous and well made, which this little piece certainly fits the bill in both departments. The background jazz is very appealing as well.
But after you finish watching the hysterical, thigh slapping video of a French kitty uploaded to YouTube by HolaKenty who so does such a tremendous job at thoroughly discrediting one of the most popular ones, "Cats hate water", you will have to admit that it certainly demonstrates that some cats are fascinated with the "wet stuff".
I particularly found this attractive kitty's rather unique technique of washing his face and ears a complete delight. I also think his particular drinking contraption far surpasses any of those costly automatic water fountain dispensers, which our cats hated due to its very unpleasant noise.
I wonder if I can teach our cats to help themselves to our kitchen faucet when they are thirsty . . . but on second thought, living in Florida with the exorbitant cost of water, perhaps this is not so wise. I sure hope that this petite chat's human pawrents have reasonable water rates.
Do your cats enjoy drinking from the faucet? Leave a comment and let us know.

This poor kitty must be desperate for a drink. Wouldn't it just be easier to put a bowl of water on the floor for him?
Ruth from England November 11, 2009 11:42 AM
I agree with Vicki ! This cat is so desperate for a decent drink he is suffering water running down his head to obtain it.His enlarged pupils and slapping of his lips disturb me, have they given him something to leave him thirsty and with a bad taste in his mouth ?
Some people will go to any lengths to make their stupid videos.
Barbara November 11, 2009 12:00 PM
I wouldn't be making a video I'd be getting my cat checked out for diabetes. Something is not right there.
Nancy November 11, 2009 12:08 PM
Sometimes cats just do funny stuff because they like to. Doesn't mean anything is wrong with them or they are being neglected or abused. I could definitely see one of my cats doing something like this, and trust me, he is very well fed and watered.
Sue November 11, 2009 12:23 PM
Very worrying to me that someone was standing videoing this cat with water running onto his head and worse still into his ears for over 2 minutes.
Andy November 11, 2009 12:34 PM
I believe that cats just sometimes are weird. All mine have a different thing they all do at some time or another. Nicky likes to give massages and acupuncture at night, Trinny loves to snuggle under the covers, Butthead simply likes to have his head scratched, no where else, and Luna...well she's afraid of everything. My take is, this cat simply likes to drink in a weird way.
Andy ;)

I have a kitty that prefers warm, soapy bath water to his clean fresh water bowl. I also had a cat that would beg me to turn on the kitchen faucet so he could not only drink, but play with the water. Some cats are just water "freaks". If this cat did not want to be there, he sure would have headed on out in a jiffy. I just think this particular kitty is enamoured with running water.
jmuhj November 11, 2009 2:54 PM
Wow, some startling comments there! I just enjoyed the video until reading them; hmm, food for thought!
As for men not loving cats, only in western society is this true. In most of the rest of the world, men do love cats, and in many places, it's dogs that we don't like.
Michelle November 11, 2009 4:29 PM
Wow, lots of ignorant comments here. It's no new news that cats love to drink from running water. It's exactly why cat fountains are recommended to get cats to drink more. It certainly doesn't mean the cat is dehydrated.
Donna November 11, 2009 5:58 PM
My cats have a fountain they love...nevertheless, every morning and every afternoon when I get home from work, MissyToe, Chester and Mouse RUN to the bathroom for me to turn on the tub. It's a very slow trickle (not like in the video)...they don't seem to mind getting their bottoms wet...Wheez will drink from the slow stream as well. Mouse even "figured out" that the spouts in the bathroom sinks must do the same, as he was sitting on the vanity looking up into the faucet, waiting for me to turn on the water. That one (Mouse) is too smart. Maybe too smart for me...LOLOL
Donna November 11, 2009 6:00 PM
Right, Michelle...I got a fountain especially so my Wheezel would drink more water when she had (has) urinary tract issues. They're well in 'remission' now that she loves drinking from the fountain...and I even put purified water in it...and oh yes...remember to wash those fountains at least weekly!
Pam November 11, 2009 11:26 PM
My cats won't drink from a running fountain. However, they will ignore a full bowl of fresh water and drink from the toilet (I now keep the lids down.) One of my cats "plays" in the water: he splashes as much out of the bowl that he can so it's all over the floor. I have to refill the bowl at least 2x a day.

My cats love running water! I have several Drinkwell water fountains and of course they love when the water in the bathroom sick or tub or in the kitchen are running.
They prefer running water than a water bowl. Most don't mind a bath or shower either. A bowl or water is boring to them. LOL

I agree that if the cat did not like the running water, it would go running not stick his head under it. I have two cats who will only drink from a glass of water even when there is a full bowl of water right next to their food dish.
Rose November 12, 2009 1:59 PM
We all know cats hate to be laughed at.Maybe our English SOH is different to USA SOH but I don't think ignorant comments are the right words to use about peoples thoughts on this ridiculous clip. It's more ignorant to accept without question that the cat wasn't dreadfully thirsty and that he wouldn't suffer with ear troubles from water running in them. Look behind the thigh slapping humour for pity's sake.
Ruth from England November 12, 2009 2:07 PM
Ignorant comment or not, it is NOT normal for a healthy cat to drink that amount of water in that way ! Watch it again, watch his mouth !
Robin November 12, 2009 2:08 PM
No, I can't say I'm comfortable with it either, I wouldn't let my cat stand under running water like that, drinking from a fountain is one thing but this isn't quite the same, it went on too long to be funny in my humble or even ignorant opinion.
Michael November 13, 2009 4:34 AM
A cat desperately thirsty wouldn't go away from running water,it would get a drink however it could.I was asked to look at this because apparently someone thinks it's ignorant to care about a cat's welfare.Especially to look at the cats dilated pupils and chomping lips, and I do wonder if the cat is high on catnip or valerian.
Sorry but I don't find it funny either.
Barbara November 13, 2009 10:21 AM
Speaking no doubt as one of those judged ignorant by Michelle, ignorant or not I wouldn't stand videoing a cat of mine that was drinking water in that way, the way his lips are working worries me and the angle of his ears and size of his pupils too. I stand by my first comment.
Margie November 15, 2009 9:38 AM
Oh that's hilarious. This cat obviously is enjoying itself immensly. Reminds me of my Rusti who does the same thing (although not quite the same way). She demands running water even though the water dish is well filled. Fresh cold water is much tastier than water that has been sitting for awhile. Vester loves to play in the water dish and will drag it all over until i have it glued down. He gets soaked and enjoys it too. TreySpot and Amber prefer to dip their paws in the dish and lick them dry. This cat is simply having a good time and i enjoyed watching him.
Joann November 15, 2009 11:37 AM
That was the funniest vieo's I have seen in a long time.
Ruth from England November 15, 2009 12:25 PM
I stand by my comments too and just hope that poor little cat is OK, that is the ONLY thing that matters !
Iniki November 15, 2009 4:43 PM
I have a cat that loes to drink from the tap just as this one does. He stands in the sink and lets the water run down his shoulder and then licks it off. This is a cat with a huge fresh bowl of water daily plus to big water containers like dogs use. He just prefers to get his water the weird way. Actually, in the wild, cats prefer runnning water to standing water. I can refill all the bowls each morning and Sabu would prefer to sip from the sink. He is a happy healthy cat too.
Thanks for sharing the great video of a cat doing his or her own thing. :)
Skylark November 15, 2009 6:28 PM
Oh, come on, people! Lighten up! This cat is not being held down under running water, he's doing it all by himself. And if everyone commenting here is owned by cats, you all know that cats don't do anything that they don't want to do. I have a Siamese cat that has 4 bowls of clean fresh filtered water all over the house, but he prefers drinking from the faucet in the bathroom whenever my husband is washing his hands or brushing his teeth. He even tried calling to us at 3 a.m. to come in and turn on the water for him! (I nixed that one the very first time he tried it!)
Some cats just love water, and it doesn't mean they're sick. I have my three cats examined by their vets every 6 months with complete blood work, and they are perfectly healthy. Drinking water doesn't indicate that a cat is sick! Only one of my three has had a problem with a UTI about a year ago. So now they're all on a urinary tract formula that encourages drinking lots of water. I'm happy to see them all drinking water.
The cat in the video is obviously enjoying himself because when he's done, he just calmly walks away. What's wrong with that?
annie November 16, 2009 12:16 AM
my cat baby ONLY wanted to drink water out of the bath tub. so each day, we had to remember to let the bath tub drip so that she could drink.
plus, she would play with the water, batting it with her paw and scattering it around the bath tub.
of course she got wet! and she didn't seem to mind.
when we lived in california, she drank water out of the dripping water spout.
she just WOULD NOT drink water out of a water dish.
Dr. Erin November 17, 2009 12:48 PM
Lighten up is right!! Wow! I was embarrassed to see these comments by people who own cats but maybe don't know cats very well. A large portion of cats enjoy water and few even swim. Tigers are wonderful swimmers. A cat that is playing in the water and having fun does not constitute animal abuse. Believe me, I am a veterinarian and unfortunately, I have to deal with abuse issues often. I highly recommend cat owners to provide running water for their cats to drink. It entices them, as often cats do not drink enough on their own.

FlagMy Petmate water fountain started making a loud noise so I unplugged it and want to get rid of it. I hate to put it in the trash where it will go into landfill, but I don't know what else to do with it. Any ideas? I guess this question would also apply to any small household appliance, like a coffee maker, steam iron, or blender. Can these be recycled?
