Dog Carpets are Not Art: They are Murder

| Print | By | October 15, 2009 1:23 PM

WARNING: This blog contains photos of these dog carpets.

It seems lately that pet lovers are besieged with news items that talk about acts of cruelty to animals. But today I received an email which contained information about one of the most chilling and brutal ones that I have ever encountered.

There are a wide variety of "Halls of Shame" on the Internet today to which the public's attention is called concerning dangerous and toxic products. There are also those which put the spotlight on people who offer services that are highly questionable and considered treacherous. But this particular act of cruelty is one that I believe trumps them all. This one calls attention to two "monsters in disguise as artists". These "artists", in Bolivia produce carpets made of dogs. Of course they had to kill the dogs to weave their evil products, and used a municipal service in LaPaz.

Ondrej Brody and Kristofer Paetau visited Bolivia to embark upon what they considered to be a political statement. In a 2008 interview, Brody said, "The dog carpets are essentially about society's hypocrisy. It questions the special status that dogs and cats have in our, western society. Although we can see that in China, despite the local culture and cuisine, the pet culture is on its rise as well.

The Bolivian experience was about hypocrisy as well, but it involved on a larger and direct scale mechanisms and structures within the society". In talking about the carpets he said, "We requested to obtain 10 sacrificed dogs for our "installation". This seemed to be a perfect paradox. A hunting carpet from a dog that is being hunted by the society".

In my opinion, Ondrej Brody and Kristofer Paetau should immediately be arrested for cruelty to animals and if found guilty face severe punishment. Additionally, their carpets should be banned from every museum around the world, starting with the museums in Bolivia.

If this story gets your blood boiling, join me and the over 2,635 animal lovers who have already signed this Care2 petition requesting that Juan Evo Morales, President of the Republic of Bolivia to ensure the humane treatment of these street dogs. He must instruct all local municipal services to take charge of all the strays and cannot in any way condone these wanton acts of cruelty.

According to the petition site, these "artists" kill 100 dogs per week in the production of these carpets.

That is horriable and disgusting!

I think mankind is going right down the toilet. Everyday I am more and more disappointed with human beings. WHat is wrong with people? Are we turning into Socialpaths or what, that we don't care about God Creatures.

Jody October 15, 2009 2:35 PM

Whoever did that is completely sick and a few unmentionables!

Dave October 15, 2009 2:51 PM

When I grew up it was cool to have a bear rug complete with head and claws. Dog carpets are against my good taste but now that I am older, so are bear rugs, elephant foot end tables and Coyote hats. It's all in our social comfort zone but leave the poor dogs alone, the've been domesticated and are looked upon as our friends.....Tan me hide when I've died clyde, and that's it hang'n on the shed is not my idea of what to do with a good friend.

This is the sickest thing I think I have read in a very long time. How can people be so creul? Well I guess I know the answer to that they don't have a heart anymore. I am sick at my stomach after reading this. I just had my beloved dog of almost 15 years put to sleep a month ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever done but I did it because she was so sick. I'm still not over it and probably never will be. I still feel guilty because I had her put to sleep even though I know in my heart it was what was best for her. But for someone to do this I can't even imagine.

Where is the Animal Rights Activist on this one?!!!!

Tammy October 15, 2009 3:33 PM

How anyone can justify this is beyond me. Dogs are so much better than us ugly humans and this is unspeakable. Shame on them and may God forgive them.

Vicki October 15, 2009 4:01 PM

This is totally unspeakable. I can hardly even make a comment about this. How could anyone do this? Makes me want to throw up.

KAY VICK October 15, 2009 4:25 PM

Once again it is proven that "the world is going to hell". Everywhere you look cruelty is becoming more and more rampant. May God have mercy on the souls that are responsible for these horrors

Donna October 15, 2009 4:58 PM

This is totally ridiculious...these animals deserved much better. I hope when the owners of these rugs pass away someone tans their hide...and let us know where they are. I'll bring the darts. :)

jmuhj October 15, 2009 5:10 PM

While I personally loathe dogs, of course I oppose cruelty to any living being. I find tiger rugs far more offensive and sickening, however; and any "product" made from any member of any feline species is far more offensive to me than this.

Rani October 15, 2009 6:23 PM

That's despicable. I agree with jmuhj that tiger rugs are offensive and sickening.

When I was a teen, I had a rabbit fur jacket, and when I was a very little girl, I had stuffed animal kitty cats that were rabbit fur... but at my age (54), I would never get a rabbit fur anything.

The sad thing is that we can't prosecute people in other countries for breaking the US rules (and hearts).

It all just REEKS of Cruella de Ville.

Diana October 15, 2009 7:19 PM

I have never wanted to display the carcus of any animal in my home. I also don't want "pieces" of them around. I have donated found items (turtle shells, snake skin, etc.) to science teacher to use in their classrooms, but the animals had vacated them long before I found them.

Cheyenne Storch October 16, 2009 8:01 AM

This is the most horrible and stomach churning photo i have ever seen. What the heck goes through peoples minds? Absolutely disgusting.

Jessy October 16, 2009 9:18 AM

I believe with all my heart that mankind is gone to Hell with no way out... that we've stooped to this level to do this.. I feel so sick to my stomach of the photos'... I just DO"NT understand what this world is coming to. and I am ashamed to call my self a human that has to live on the same planet as one's how do this.

Aine O'Neill October 17, 2009 4:31 AM

This is truly sickening and I'd like to do the same to these two pieces of vermin that started this, no animal should be used in such a way.

Amy October 17, 2009 9:12 AM

Only one word to describe this awful thing. SICK!!!!

Susan October 20, 2009 1:10 PM

Sick people; peta should be on their a--es

ray October 29, 2009 8:13 PM

this is sick!

Donna Graves October 30, 2009 1:48 PM

As I once told a lady in an airport,( she was wearing a full length mink coat) "what I would like to see, is some animal walk in wearing a coat made out of HER." I would happily turn these indiviuals into "a**hole rugs"
The people who do this, and the people who buy them should be killed, the world would be better off without them. It is my firm belief that somehow, someday they will pay-what goes around does come around, and for them it might be sooner than they think. Please try to post some information on where to find them- there must be some animal lovers in that area, and if not I know people who would be willing to travel.

Jo Singer November 10, 2009 10:36 AM

From the Care2 Petition site staff with an update and results of this petition,

"Hello wonderful people!

The petition is now closed and it's on the way to reach President Morales. We can't turn back time, but we can ask him to respect animals, strays or not. That horrible service which kills 100 street dogs/week must close down, animals must be helped not murdered.

Thank each and everyone of you for your precious help"

This is very good news.
