A Letter of Love From a Postal Worker: A Touching Story

| Print | By | September 11, 2009 1:28 PM

Whenever I run across a compelling anecdote that I know will touch the hearts of our readers, and even though this very appealing little tale has been circulating the Internet for many years, each time I read it, it continues to tug at my heart strings. Even if this is a fable or "fairy tale" and the story is not true, that a writer took the time to compose a "message" that is so exquisitely compelling and which truly speaks to the highest level of humanity and unconditional love, then I highly applaud the author for his or her very laudable imagination.

11-little girl with dog.jpgI felt this item was both a glorious and inspirational way to end the week as it so diverges from the many things happening in our world which are so deeply disturbing. It is also dedicated to the memory of and a tribute to all those who lost beloved pets eight years ago on 9/11.

So without further ado, here is one of the "kindest" "gifts" given to a very sad little girl by an anonymous postal worker employed in the "dead letter" office of the United States postal service. This was the letter she discovered quite by accident.

"Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

'Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith'

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, "When a Pet Dies." Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

"Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. . . Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love,
God"

I think you will agree that it is indeed reassuring that there are people in the world who are so generous with their love.

I have read this story several times, but it never fails to touch me. That little girl could have very well been me. I so love my animals and losing them is so hard. I have tears in my eyes right now remembering the beloved ones I have lost. This is a very touching subject and I just can't dwell on it any more.

Iniki September 11, 2009 3:35 PM

This is beautiful. I am in tears but they are warm loving tears. I know how this little girl felt. Thank you for sharing.

Amy September 11, 2009 4:46 PM

Precious and heart warming. There should be more stories like this. The world would be a better place for sure.

This story is AWESOME just like God!!

jmuhj September 11, 2009 5:18 PM

Totally agree with Iniki, Amy and Anonymous above. And yes, the world WOULD be so much a better place if more people only had the courage to feel their true feelings and love without fear, as we all should.

Donna September 11, 2009 7:37 PM

I TOTALLY agree with all the posts...and especially with Jmuhj's post. If only people were more like our beloved pets...unconditional love. It's a good feeling to know we'll see them again. (Boy, when I get to Rainbow Bridge, there's gonna be a flock of cats and a few dogs to meet me!)

I've never read this, but I have tears running out of my eyes. It is a wonderful story. Some people maintain that animal's have no souls. I think they are the best gift that God ever gave to us. I hope to see all of my kitties again, along with my hamsters, and guinea pigs; and I won't be allergic to them either!

So touching, so helpful, a reminder that each of us has, within, the ability to be that kind spirit and that such a kind spirit might also be a neighbor (aren't we all?) yet to be met :)

Margaret September 16, 2009 5:04 PM

Thank-you for posting this. This touches the heart and shows that there ARE still people out there that with a heart and kind spirit.

I have also read this story a number of times and no matter how many more times I read it I know I will cry. It takes a very special person to have answered this little girls letter. They say they do not know if it is real, but I believe in my heart it is. We need more people in the world like that of the person who wrote the little girl back.

Earlyriserlk September 16, 2009 5:42 PM

This is a heartwarming story. If we could always live and think like the young innocent children what a wonderful world it would be. Our pets give us so much comfort. When they leave us it is difficult not to feel the void. For this 4 year old little girl to express such gratitude to God for what she had experienced is without a doubt incredibly touching. She's a very special little girl. As for the Angel who responded in care of God....without a doubt, and incredible human being as well.

Wow, this was so nice to read after a long, tiring, grueling day that made me question my faith in humanity. Thank you so much for reminding me that there are good people out in the world. I cried...hard!

Darlene September 16, 2009 6:28 PM

I loved this story. I recently lost a pet of my own. Tasha, she was almost 15 years old and I had her since she was a puppy. I know she is with God and reading stories like this is so heart warming. Thanks for sharing it.

I never saw this before but the tears won't stop. What a kind soul to do that for that little girl. I don't care if it's true or not...the story is precious.

Just beautiful!

Shani September 21, 2009 3:39 PM

The most heart-warming, loving, and beautiful story every written, and I ever read! If everyone in the world had a heart like this "postal worker," (whether real or not), what a wonderful world it would truly be!!!

Scotty September 24, 2009 6:42 PM

I needed what was remaining from two kleenix boxes and a half roll of TP to get through this past June 9th, when our beloved 15-year-old miniature poodle "Lou" had passed on after a stroke -- I've just grabbed the last of the new box that we'd bought after that sad day after reading this. If ever there was a need to "epitomize" the goodness of the human race, I'd put this story right up there with the story of the 6-year-old cancer victim that used his Make-a-Wish grant to gift everybody in his life that he'd loved. That little boy didn't select one thing for himself, until the store manager stepped in and granted the little Angel another trip through the store. This story is that special - Thank You for posting this

Now, this is a benevolent, non-narcissistic God I could believe in! It's always hard to lose a beloved pet, but especially devastating for a child. Thanks for sharing this wonderful anecdote.

I've also read this many times, and like others, it always touches my heart..I love animals, and I've lost some also, and it is so hard, since I just lose my heart to them...each one means so much and is so special, it tears my heart out to lose one...thanks for the reminder again, that their love is unconditional, it would be so nice if our world was like this...thanks..:))
