Michael Vick: Should he be Returned to Pro Football?

| Print | By | July 27, 2009 12:10 PM

Once again the Michael Vick story is back in the news. Last Monday, July 20 Vick completed serving his federal custody sentence for participating and promoting dog fighting. Vick, prior to his arrest and conviction for his involvement in the horrific activities in which his Virginia dog fighting facility, "Bad Newz Kennels", had been the highest paid player in the National Football League, (NFL).

American Pit Bull Terrier
27-American Pit Bull Terrior.jpgNot only did Vick receive jail time, he was also released from the Atlanta Falcon's football team and an indefinite suspension from the NFL, but his stellar position in the game of football, of course, has been permanently tainted and his role-model status has been forever sullied, in my opinion. At the same time, the notoriety of this particular case has certainly focused on crimes of animal cruelty with the concomitant need for stricter laws and punishment for these crimes, which is the only silver lining connected with the Michael Vick case.

But should Vick be permitted to once again earn his livelihood by playing professional football? Should he again be rewarded with a salary which can only be described as a "fantasy" for most working folks? Does he have the right to return to his stellar place in the world of sports?

Recently, Mr. Ed Sayres, the President and CEO commented, "The question isn't whether he deserves to earn a livelihood. The question is whether Mr. Vick should be able to re-join the ranks of elite athletes in the NFL." Mr. Sayres continued by saying, ". . . the facts are clear: Mr. Vick participated in a six-year pattern of illegal activity. His plea clearly stated that along with these activities, he savagely electrocuted and beat dogs to death after they lost their brutal fights. This was not a one-time transgression or crime of passion--this was a multi-year pattern of behavior that demonstrates a startling lack of moral character and judgment.

"Given the stature of what it means to be a part of the NFL, it is crucial that Mr. Vick first express remorse for what he has done--something that he has yet to do throughout his incarceration."

There are, of course, supporters who feel that Vick should be reinstated to the NFL as quickly as possible. In fact, while Vick was in jail, according to "Breaking News 24/7 online", Vick was offered a one-year contract, by the New York minor league team, The Albany Firebirds as soon as he is reinstated by the NFL. His salary of course will be a fraction of what he is used to receiving. The contract would pay him only the league standard of $200.00 a week, plus a $50.00 bonus for a win. The contract also includes a provision that Vick make a $100,000 donation to a local Humane Society.

I wonder if Leopards ever do "change their spots". Since Vick has not expressed the remorse to which Sayres refers, does that mean that he has not sufficiently changed his behavior and morals to enable him to return to the game of professional football?

What are your thoughts about his future? Leave a comment and share them with us.

Micheal Vick is not worthy of ever being among the elite pro football players. If he is reinstated, I will not ever watch or support the team that chooses this creep. He has no remorse for anything he did. The only thing he's sorry about is getting caught in the first place. He is scum in my opinion and should never be allowed to live the life of luxury again. He should never be permitted to own a dog of any kind for the rest of his life. Who knows what he would do behind closed doors to a poor innocent dog. He's already proved how evil he is to pit bulls. Anyone that supports him being reinstated is just as bad as he is.

Vicki July 27, 2009 1:26 PM

This is quite a tough one. While my heart says not only should he never be allowed to play professional sports for any sum of money, the truth is, his crime had nothing to do with his occupation. If I were the judge, I would have demanded even more strict punishment on him or any other person involved in this kind of horrible act towards animals. But I am not sure of how his occupation would have any tie with his abuse of animals, other than to have him suffer a much lower income as part of his punishment.

Ruth from England July 27, 2009 1:48 PM

I detest football and I detest anyone who abuses animals in any way at all.In my opinion he shouldn't be allowed to earn money doing something he enjoys, he should be made to clean the streets of dog mess,7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, for the rest of his miserable life.

lj July 27, 2009 2:14 PM

Anyone lacking in morals, as Michael Vick is, should not ever be put into a position such as that of any kind of role model for children. It sends the wrong message. Nope, I think while he may have been a great ball player, he does not belong in the league. Nor should he ever be permitted in the company of any animal again for the rest of his life. I'd never let the man near anything where kids could maybe view him as some kind of a hero. Let him clean up dog crap in some kennel for the rest of his life. But even that's too good for the likes of Michael Vick, who is out of jail too soon! It is precisely his kind who has put the breed of the Pit Bull at risk. A dog is only as bad as it's owner. ie: Michael Vick was a perfect example of poor animal ownership!!

Cindy July 27, 2009 2:15 PM

This is not a tough one at all. ANYone who gains from animals suffering should be subjected to the same treatment for their punishment. Animals cannot defend themselves, cannot speak for themselves and cannot stand up in court and request justice. Had Mr. Vick been satisfied with the exhorbitant sum of money he received as a Pro Football Player, perhaps he would not have been greedy enough to make animals suffer for his own personal gain... He obviously was not happy with the money he was making - what might he try to do next? I vote no - he should do meanial tasks for the rest of his days...

jmuhj July 27, 2009 2:34 PM

American football is a misogynist and uber-violent "sport" and I'd love to see it disappear. As for Mr. Vick, I know there's a lot of money involved in a return to that career, but hopefully he might consider something more positive as a way to continue his life...

Rani July 27, 2009 3:15 PM

I don't care for football and I detest what Michael Vick did, Not only was he horribly cruel to those poor dogs, but he did it to make money that he didn't need. IMO, he deserved worse and more fitting punishment than he got, something that taught him some real lessons.

That said, though, I agree with Vicki that his crime didn't have anything to do with his career. Saying that he can't return to football because of his crimes doesn't make sense.

What I do hope is that they let him return to football. And then any team that does offer him a contract has SUCH a drop in revenues and viewership that the team rethinks having him and word gets around the NFL that he is too despicable to have in the league.

That'd be nice, but too many football fans won't care.

Rani

TERRY July 27, 2009 3:31 PM

I CAN GO ON AND ON ON THIS SUBJECT AND NO. HE SHOULD ROT IN JAIL.

Andy July 27, 2009 3:39 PM

I'm a fan of football but I'm also an even bigger fan of my pit bull who's like a son to me. Simply put, his actions as an elite player cost him his job and time in prison, which to say the least, was certainly not enough to make him be remorseful for his stupid actions. 6 YEARS he did what he did to these helpless dogs, 6 YEARS...Even if his line of work is not tied directly to his actions against these poor dogs I feel that he deserves what he got and more for what he did. He's supposed to be a role model to people that look up to him. Many young boys growing up wanted to play like him. He doesn't deserve to put in a position that will only make him a living contradiction: a "role model" that spent years torturing animals for money he didn't need. *^$& a Michael Vick:P

Crystal July 27, 2009 3:42 PM

NEVER! Too many see professional athletes as role models. We can't promote someone who sees nothing wrong with abusing and killing animals for sport. Not only is it morally wrong but legally as well. And since he appears to have no remorse whatsoever that is not a person I want anyone to idolize in anyway.

Anonymous July 27, 2009 3:48 PM

No how no way He shouldn't be allowed to own another animal of any kind either. He should be thrown in a vicious dog pit so dogs could rip him apart instead of some helpless animals

Chris July 27, 2009 3:53 PM

I agree that his crime against those innocent pitbulls had nothing to do with his pro football career..however he as a pro football player is a roll model for young aspiring kids...to let him back into the game would be telling this countries children that its ok to abuse animals and get back into the game...so NO way in HECK should he be allowed back in the game...let him clean up crap for the rest of his life...thats about all he's worth to me...

amy July 27, 2009 3:59 PM

playing a professional sport is an occupation- a job, and it should have the same rules and protocals as with any other job. Michael Vick was convicted and imprisoned for what he did, and not only is he a role model for young children all over the world, he's a person who could have used his position to spread good value, morals and ethics. But he didn't, and because he was convicted for dog fighting for over SIX years there's no way he should be able to go back to earning that sum of money and playing football. If he does, that's like telling the young kids that watch him that, "it's ok to beat and kill dogs, you'll still be able to play football and earn millions of dollars and still be adored." I don't think so.

vetmed_doc July 27, 2009 4:01 PM

This waste of human space is not even worth the expenditure of energy. Indeed, leopards NEVER do change their spots. Vick IS what he IS, a common felon and animal abuser and murderer, among other things. Why should this common scum reap the benefits of a hefty football contract after he indulged in illegal activities, FEDERAL crimes no less, and murdered dogs, to top it all off? More to the point, this bastard doesn't deserve to breathe the same air we do. The NFL is Vick's employer. When someone in the private sector commits a felony, they are terminated because they do NOT want an association with criminals. How is the NFL any different, unless giving contracts to losers and lowlifes like Vick and his brethren are commonplace? It's NO different for Vick with the NFL. Again, why in God's name should this individual reap ANY type of financial rewards for showing the world what a contemptible piece of garbage he is? He electrocuted those dogs, and the same lack of compassion, kindness and decency he showed those poor dogs is the same lack of kindness and compassion I show to Vick. I'm unmoved by his plight and situation and all I need to do is think about what he did to those dogs and the hatred and ill will returns for this man. If I had my way he would be in a pine box. Anyone who is capable of this magnitude of cruelty should be kicked to the curb because children will see this as him being rewarded for doing the WRONG thing. If this country wasn't so hung up on sports figures the way they put these so-called atheletes on an undeserved pedestal, I wouldn't be so concerned. But since we do, I am. Try and look at it from a child's vanatage point: "he did those horrible things to dogs and now he's working again and making all this money! Wow, maybe I can do the same thing." Are you kidding me? Children are impressionable and it's unfortunate they put overpaid jocks on a higher plane that academicians who can teach them something. I save lives, he takes them away through sheer cruelty and why would the SOB need to involve himself in illegal activities when he was making all that money? I rest my case. And no one could give a damn about football fans. It's a sport played by overpaid jocks who are nothing more than spoiled and petulant crybabies that think they're above the law, and this is what you want your children looking up to? Vick has done nothing productive for society. Everything he has done has been to reap significant financial rewards for himself,NO other. And the fact that he abuses and kills other living creatures is testament of his lack of moral character and integrity. Once again, someone like that is better off in a parallel universe. The author of this is a DVM and a Diplomate of the ACVS, which would make me an enemy and detractor of someone of Vick's ilk.

Anonymous July 27, 2009 4:05 PM

Some of these comments sound as if a *ing game of football is put before the lives of innocents animals and should take precedence over everything else. You're kidding, right?

LINDA July 27, 2009 4:05 PM

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

Yvonne July 27, 2009 4:15 PM

I, in now way, condone what Mr. Vick did. I abhore it, in fact. However, he has been punished and should be given a chance to prove himself. The fact that his name has been tainted will remain with him forever; and thayt is a permanent punishment. He should be allowed to play football if he can make the team.

Amy July 27, 2009 4:36 PM

I have to agree with most of the posts so far. I like others fear the impression this will have on the kids who adore him. Our kids need to learn compassion and love, not evil and brutality.

Anonymous July 27, 2009 5:09 PM

I think Michael Vick should be subjected to he horrific pain he supported in the dog fighting rings. Let him go into the ring with a meat scented suit and turn the dogs loose on him!!!

Laurie July 27, 2009 5:40 PM

This creep should have to endure what he did to those poor animals
I will boycott any team that signs this cruel and very evil man!!
Jmo

lep July 27, 2009 6:22 PM

I dont think what he did was right... as said many young kids looked at him as a role model.. now they see if you abuse animals its ok because Michael vick did and he gets to return to the football field. I like football but i dont think he should be able to play.

THERESA , SHAY, AND TURBO July 27, 2009 6:59 PM

I THINK HE SHOULD GO ROT IN H--L SOMEWHERE.

Skylark July 27, 2009 7:40 PM

Now that he has been given permission to return to the sport of football, wouldn't it be justice if none of the NFL teams would allow him to play on their teams? And wouldn't it be sending a message if none of the fans would watch whatever team might be entertaining the idea of reinstating him? Sure, he's paid his dues, and he should be allowed to make a living, but he doesn't belong among the ranks of the "elite" sports stars who make millions.

Diana July 27, 2009 7:59 PM

I'd rather have him playing football and paying lots of taxes. The government is gonna need all the money it can get!

Debbie July 27, 2009 8:26 PM

I think that any team that signs him on should be protested forever. These people do not care what someone did all they care about is money!!!! I hope no one signs him on but you know someone will - I hate the guy - he should be in jail forever - I hope he fails in everything he does - what goes around comes around - he should rot in hell for what he did and for anyone else that abuses animals - he is a scumbag - and deserves nothing good to ever happen to him again. If he was dying in front of me I would just step over him!

Carol July 27, 2009 8:54 PM

I do not believe animal abuser, M.Vick, should be allowed to play professional sports. Professional sports is an organization of people who represent heroism to youth and he has no hero characteristics. When one has abused pets like he did, what would he do to a human if "made angry?" I think he should be forced to wear a neon sign on him that says he is low life because he "could" kill animals if he wanted to. NEVER should he be allowed.

Jessy In Ill. July 28, 2009 8:59 AM

I found myself yelling at the tv when I heard that He had now served all of his sentence.. he is not even a Man... He would be put in the cage that he kepted his dog's and put into a pit and be forced to kill or be eaten on as he would force somany of his own.. This skum should rot in HELL. and if we all know of how it goes when it comes to a player, they law looks the other way and just slaps them on the hand and say's "DONT DO IT AGAIN"...I will NOT watch any team that he will be on,, I just do'nt understand the world of what its come to,to make money off a person that came give them the world.

Today I learned that Vick was reinstated by the NFL but ten teams have already refused him. Hope that is the trend.

sharon August 2, 2009 8:51 AM

I definitely think Vick should not be reinstated to the NFL or be able to play for any football league. What message is that sending to youth who idolize this game? I am a teacher and I plan on using this topic in my classroom this year. More teens need to really understand the evil character of some of their "celebrities." I hope Vick gets the bad karma coming to him.

Pat August 4, 2009 12:51 PM

As an animal activist for all creatures great and small he was in a position of superior status playing the game he loved and earning exuberent amounts of money why did he have to stoop so low as to have dogs viciously ripping each other apart.of course the dog is going to go nuts wouldn't you if another human was put in a pen to tear you apart.he should never be put back in that poistion why if you do kids will look at him and say well he got away with it.let the guy fall to a common level and earn a wage like the rest of us poor saps in the wordl Shame on you Micheal you are a disgrace to the human race and every one like you.

Ellen Horn August 6, 2009 7:14 PM

In my heart I would say 'never'; but my heart does not rule the practical world. Vick should have to give part of the proceeds of his salary to animal advocacy centers, and do it openly, using his celebrity to further discourage this crime. This is the only practical and just way that this man, blessed with fortune and luxury, should be able to continue being in the limelight of fame and fortune.

Ellen Horn August 6, 2009 7:24 PM

My heart says no; let him be put into a cage and fight for his life for the profit of another! In this practical world though, that is not likely to happen. Vick should pay animal advocacy agencies part of his salary for the rest of his career as restitution. He should do it openly, and use his celebrity and good fortune to discourage the outrage he participated in. It would serve as a constant reminder of what he did, and the animals could use the money. Vick should not be allowed to own a goldfish. He should be put on a tight leash, preferably one with spikes on the inside of it, unless he really and truly is sorry. (I doubt it) Still, he could be used as a public reminder of the existence of this crime, and from time to time, he should make public statements, and donations to further deter other potential and actual dog fighters.

Great headline. If your cookie has a bite-sized action and your reader completes the action, I think two things happen. Their self-confidence goes up (which feels good) and their trust in you increases.

Lauren August 19, 2009 1:26 AM

I would like to hang micheal vick and his parents for raising a piece of crap. No mercy for animal abusers. They are obviously desturbed people. I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around. He will get what he deserves one day. For now I will just pray he rotts in H*LL.

carol September 11, 2009 1:46 PM

He should not be allowed to play ever again. After what he did or allowed to be done to those poor dogs. He put them through hell therefore thats where he should go.

Gabbie September 25, 2009 3:34 PM

He should not for what he did. all of the dog's that he put thouth heck. i love dog's. pit bull's are relly good dog's if you trin them right. HE SHOULD ROT IN JAIL.
