Whack-a Kitty: A Humorous or Harmful Video?
I love funny cat videos and l enjoy sharing them with our readers. Sometimes I spend hours searching YouTube, one of my favorite sources for just that purrfect one to include in my blog posts. Since there is an abundance of creative and innovative budding movie "directors" uploading videos of their precious kitties, it sometimes becomes a dauntless task for me to choose a super-exceptional one.
I have often featured Aaron Rift's delightful productions of his series, "The Cat Diaries", and am thrilled that his kittens and cats have tickled the fancy of a growing bunch of kitty loving followers. His clowder of cats and kittens, the stars of his entertaining productions, are obviously adored and cherished. Mr. Rift's strong knowledge of feline behavior is obvious. Most importantly his cats appear to be having a delightful time as they play and romp in front of his camera.

This being said, during my journey through the YouTube selection of kitty-land the other day, I ran across a video that really set me back on my heels. Taking into consideration the British idiom, "One man's meat is another man's poison" and allowing for the possibility that some folks find even "twisted" humor to be appealing, I still cannot wrap my head around how anyone can find anything funny about the video, "Whack-a-Kitty" Even the title sets my teeth on edge. It sounds like a mafia production to me.
While its creator, rbelluso may consider that this will appeal to cat lovers, it amazes me to what lengths some people will go to get their "15 minutes of fame". The video description reads, "A litter of kittens replaces mechanic moles in a live version of the classic carnival game. But don't worry for the cats' cerebral health -- the mallet is doing less whacking and more gentle petting. It's time to play Whack-A-Kitty! It's like the game Whack-A-Mole on cute overload. We had a lot of fun making this video and so did the kittens."
While the video included a disclaimer in big bold letters, "PLEASE NOTE THAT NO KITTENS WERE INJURED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO", it is hard for me to buy that these adorable young kittens would not be adversely affected with what appears to me as aggressive and insensitive tactics. I would imagine that these little balls of fluff might become rather head-shy from being "bopped" repeatedly by an ominous appearing material- covered mallet repeatedly descending on their delicate heads.
So without further amew, take a moment to watch the video to which I am referring.
Am I missing something here? Purrhaps I have lost my sense of humor, or am overreacting? Please leave a comment with your reactions.

You know I always say it like it is. You are overreacting. If they were hitting these kitties and hurting them, I would be the first to light the firecracker under their seat, but they are barely touching them. While I find this neither harmful, or humerous, the kitties don't seem to mind what is happening at all. In fact, they look like they are just in it to be in the video.
Reno June 19, 2009 2:47 PM
While I agree with Vicki that these kitties are not being hurt and they actually seem to somewhat enjoy this "game" I understand Jo's concerns. It's the same concern that I had with the disgusting Bonzai Kitty website years ago. While this family is not hurting the kittens, the video is now on You Tube where millions of people can see it. The potential for disaster is very real as some sick minded teenagers, children or adults could take the "game" even further and severly hurt or even kill kittens, cats, puppies, dogs, rabbits, you name the animal. I think people need to be very careful about what they put out on the internet........

Sorry, Vicki and Reno, I totally disagree. From the title to the concept, I DON'T LIKE THIS VIDEO. YouTube is highly irresponsible in allowing a lot of the very cruel and vicious content posted to the site; there is a petition going at Change.org against it and strongly urging YouTube to be more vigilant. I hope everyone will sign on to it. The squeaky wheel always gets the grease.

I don't like it either

I have to agree with everybody here. The name is terrible, the concept is terrible but the kittens are obviously not being injured. And, yes, I can envision some sicko taking this to the extreme.
I'm certain the maker of the video saw it as fun but failed to think it thru before posting it on YouTube.

I totally agree that this video is unacceptable. Who's to say that someone with a sick mind watching what begins with a game of "whack a kitty" won't turn it into another game with more serious consequences, such as whacking a kitty against the wall to see how it breaks!
I work in an animal hospital, and I've seen the results of animal cruelty. It can start with something as "entertaining" as this stupid whack a kitty video and soon turn into something vicious resulting in death.
Please, please, please! no one should support YouTube allowing this kind of video involving very innocent and fragile animals.

I saw an interview with the couple who made the video, and they said they got the idea because the made the box for the kittens to play in and the kittens were having a ball popping in and out of the holes. The wife said it reminded her of that game (don't know the name of it) that is often at kids play centers, so they made the sign and taped it.
I find the video slightly amusing but not funny. I am not offended by it, nor do I think it's going to spark a rash of animal abuse. People need to lighten up and worry about real animal abuse.
Reno June 20, 2009 9:28 AM
I understand what you are saying Diana, but, unfortunately, there are a lot of people that don't seem to get the difference between "entertainment" and real life. I have seen too many cruel things happen to both people and animal that the kids saw in a movie, a video, heard in a song, etc. You'd be surprise what can spark a rash of animal abuse, or people abuse for that matter. And any cruelty is real abuse, in my opinion, it's not just what makes the news where the animal dies. Most people that do abuse don't even need a reason, but there are twisted minds out there that get their ideas from things such as this video. Look what happened with Bonzai Kitty. :( People are so callous to the fact that animals have feelings and emotions just like people. I find it sad and appalling.....

I don't like it and it worries me, even though the kittens don't seem to be actually "whacked" the fact that they're repeatedly pushed down makes it obvious they don't want to BE down, they want to be climbing out of the holes. OK maybe it was done in an attempt at humour but in the first place the video should have been kept private and not put on youtube for anyone to see and copy! Secondly the whack a kitty sign is offensive, which one of them actually had the idea to hit the little things on their heads, what sort of mind turns from loving them to imagining whacking them? There is too much violence in the world already, presenting ideas such as this to sickos who abuse animals is foolish and irresponsible.
Ruth in England June 20, 2009 12:00 PM
My blood ran cold imagining the sick weirdos who like to think up new forms of animal abuse, seeing that video and deciding to have a go with a real hammer. It's not at all funny, tiny kittens have very fragile skulls and whoever thought that stupid game up wants hitting on the head themselves....but HARD !
Janis June 22, 2009 7:29 PM
I think its kind of silly myself and certainly hope no kids see it and decide to do the same thing only a lot rougher with the intention of harming kittens. I agree with Ruth in England and the rest that worry about it.
bobbi June 25, 2009 1:05 AM
I thought the video was discusting, especially when one of the kittens had such a frightened look on it's face. I'm sure there were other ways to amuse themselves instead of doing rotten things to defensless animals.

Hello, can you please post some more information on this topic? I would like to read more.

i think the video is cute. you can clearly see no one is hitting the kittens they are touching the tops of their heads lightly and the kittens are having fun. it was funny and adorable. lighten up, worry about immaciated animals that dont get fed and get beaten.
