Demando Cat: To Sleep or Purrchance to Dream?

| Print | By | April 29, 2009 12:41 PM

You may think that I am a bit "around the bend" when you read this item further, but please lend me a sympathetic ear. I am in desperate search of some support from my fellow feline fans, as my pressing need is good night's sleep. It has been ages since the great god Hypnos has bestowed upon me the gift of slumber, and I have actually forgotten the last time I had a night of undisturbed, blissful unconsciousness.

29-puppysheet2_thumb[2].jpgSo what is at the root of my insomnia? It is time to point my finger at our lilac point Oriental Short hair, Hush Puppy.

I lie awake wondering what kind of mischief he is up to when he is not snuggled close beside me at night. I know he is scheming to get me, and as I toss and turn, beads of sweat dribble down my forehead. It is certainly not a pleasant sight. His goal is to get his "kneads" met and since he has a long attention span, if I don't pay attention to him when he wants it, I am in store for a very unpleasant battle of wills.

Hush Puppy's all-time favorite trick is to continuously and vigorously pounce upon my top sheet, until I begrudgingly succumb to his urgent need to play, or to be petted. With his voluminous purr roaring in my ear, and his paw delicately patting my nose, it is really difficult to resist his invitations. I try; but I am never successful.

Even if I manage to drop off to dreamland, Hush Puppy will grant me a brief respite but the moment day breaks he insists on being fed . . . after all it is breakfast time for a hungry feline. I lay back momentarily, wondering if a feline-oriented time zone has been discovered. Hush Puppy doesn't care either way.

However, I am certain that I am not alone with this dawning dilemma and there are folks here in cyber-space who has similar sob stories to tell. In fact, I was delighted to find this compelling little video made by Simonscat that proves that my melodrama is not unique.
So I am sure you will get a giggle out of it, as you identify with the haggard human subjected to his cat's demands. This is the epitome of Demando Cat in action.

"A hungry cat resorts to increasingly desperate measures to wake its sleeping owner."

What do you do to ensure yourself a full night's sleep? Leave a comment and please help me out here!

Well the video is a hoot! But I would imagine if this were going on in real life, I would have to figure something out to get a good nights rest. I don't think I could sleep very well if all this activity is taking place. Something would have to give!

Simon's Cat is the BEST. I love all those videos, don't you?

Well, sounds like Hush Puppy and Trouble don't have free-choice dry food out at night. Friends of mine who feed only two meals and do not leave dry food out at night have this problem, too. We have an array of dry free-choice, so I'M the one who wakes my clowder up in the morning. During the night, they come and go as they please, visiting the snack bar whenever they feel the urge.

I know you won't do this, Jo, but you could shut the bedroom door with the kitties on the other side of it and put in some ear plugs. Yeah, right. That'll happen.

Jo, this has to be one of the BEST stories you've ever done! Very well written and it held my attention the whole time I was reading. :) Keep up the excellent writing. Have you ever thought of writing a book about your cats and their exploits?

I am owned by 7 cats and I am lucky enough not to be joined by all of them at the same time. The 2 youngest Dot The Snot and her sister Freckles usually join me for a nap. Yes,they do the knead on me because of my soft blanket which I use to cover my feet. Once they are done (about 15 minutes) they like to fall asleep on my feet. I do not mind one bit. lol

I feed my cats when I get home from work amd leave the dry out overnight. There is always enough left for a morning snack. (I give them their 1 1/2 cup full allotment of food in the AM...its all they get for the day.) Leaving it out at night has stopped them from getting me up SOMEWHAT.

Since Mouse turns on my touchlamp, it's now plugged into a powerstrip right next to my bed that I can flip OFF...cutting the power to the touchlamp. That worked too (when I remember to turn off the power strip.

Wheez sleeps next to me quietly all night, Mouse INSISTS on sleeping on top of me and barely tolerates my changing positions. He'll get down, wait until I settle in again, then climb back on to resume HIS night's sleep. Think he's trying to tell me he's dominant? LOLOL

The only time mine wake me at night is when somebody decides it's time to wrestle with one of the others, genearlly his sister who's fast asleep at the foot of the bed. Dry food is put out before I go to bed so that they can nibble if they so desire. One has been known to walk right past DH in the morning and come fuss at me because the water bowl is empty.

Now Jo, I just know that Hush Puppy loves you. He loves you so much he just has to have your attention all day and all night too. Ahhh...well, now to the situation. We were going through that same problem here until we changed the cats feeding schedules. They are fed twice a day. we feed them at nine A.M. and 9 P.M.. That seems to make the more agreeable to sleeping through the night. As I get up at about 7:30 each morning they wake up at the same time. At last I get some sleep lulled to dreamland by the soft contented purring and the sounds of frogs and crickets. I just love living out in the country with such beautiful lullabye music.

Get an automatic feeder and set the timer to go off at 5 or 6 a.m. But methinks it's also a matter of Hush Puppy wanting your attention as much as he wants food, don't you?

I love Simon's cat videos, I can watch them all, over and over again and still sit and laugh like a drain. They are so true to life ! My bedmate Jozef announces morning just like that, but thankfully he doesn't know I have a cosh under my bed table (in case of burglars)lol He jumps, he meows, he spins like a top, he sounds and feels as if he is wearing pit boots. He begins his repertoire from 4.30 am ......yawn........I try to ignore him and he sometimes settles a bit but not for long ....then his brother tunes up in the other bedroom, meowwwwwwww meowwwwwww and I hear the groans from that bed'Please Walter, just a tiny bit longer' 35 years of cats, 35 years of early mornings ...oh well, at least it gives us longer days to do all we have to do.And if the boyz don't stir early, we worry are they OK ? lol

What is a full night's sleep??? Haven't had one in years. Topaz is "Simons Cat" - minus the baseball bat. Only major difference is that she kneads with all four feet and then I get the cold wet nose in my face and a love bite to go with it. Thank goodness the other 16 don't pull this or I would probably sleep out in the barn with the horse. At least all she does is snore.

Skylark! You hit the nail on the head!

Baby doesn't wake me about food. Baby wakes me for attention. He starts kneading at my bladder!
