Responsible Dog Ownership Day

The American Kennel Club (www.akc.org), which is the largest registry of pedigreed dogs in the world, sponsors Responsible Dog Ownership Day each year. This celebrates the thousands of responsible owners, and educates folks how to join their ranks.

The AKC encourages dog and pet-related organizations to celebrate with them by holding a community event to promote responsible dog ownership. You can do this ANYTIME during the month of September. AKC hosts its own events in New York City this coming Saturday, September 20 in Madison Square Park, and Raleigh, NC on Saturday, September 27 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. If you’re in the area, please attend! You’ll learn all about the different programs and services that help owners be more responsible.

Dog clubs and animal welfare organizations could offer a wide range of informational events. Offer a contest for children for the best drawings, photos or essays about dogs that feature a “responsibility” angle. Host a booth that provides information about dog rescue and adoption. Perhaps local veterinarians or the Red Cross could conduct demonstrations of first aid techniques, or agility dog clubs provide a performance. Last year, more than 380 dog clubs and other organizations participated, so be creative! Have fun with your dogs! Let me know what type of event your community hosted.
