Pet Psychics: Real or Scams?

Now I might just hiss some people off with this blog, but it relates back to an earlier post about finding good, reliable information. Recently on my animal behavior list, one of the consultants mentioned that when working with clients, occasionally they’d already called in a “pet psychic” about the problem.

Obviously the psychic didn’t cure the complaint or the professional consultant wouldn’t have been called. But that didn’t stop the owner from still being confused and mislead by the “reading” which may or may not be accurate. And my money’s on the latter.

How in the wide-world-of-pets can somebody diagnose a pet problem simply by looking at a picture? Not even veterinarians diagnose long distance, and when I consult by phone, it’s a long process with lots of questions from the owner--not the cat or dog.

Perhaps there are extra-sensory talented folks able to do extraordinary things. But all too often, the advice garnered from these animal communicators smacks more of good PR. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with finding out Fluffy’s favorite color for a bed, great harm potentially could be done if the “psychic” tells you Fluffy’s excessive urination is because she’s jealous -- when instead, she’s suffering from a health issue like diabetes that could be diagnosed and treated properly.

I was so concerned about this topic, that I invited my colleague to my Pet Peeves radio show to talk about the subject and you can listen at PetLifeRadio.com.

Have you ever consulted with a pet psychic? What happened?
