MARS Petcare US Voluntary Pet Food Recall
On September 12, 2008, the Mars Petcare US announced a Nationwide Voluntary Recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. These products have been recalled voluntarily due to a potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.
The Salmonella bacteria can cause serious infections in dogs and cats. Additionally, if cross contamination has occurred by handling of the pet food by people, especially children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems, they may be affected as well.

Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should watch for any of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Salmonella, on rare occasions can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, urinary tract infections and eye irritation. Any consumer who has handled the recalled products who exhibit these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
Pets affected with Salmonella may be lethargic, have diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Decreased appetite, fever, abdominal pain may be the only noticeable symptoms. Animals may be carriers who exhibit no visible symptoms, but can potentially infect other animals or humans. Please contact your vet if you notice any of these symptoms and your pet has consumed these products.
The company is collaboratively working with the FDA to determine the nature and source of the Salmonella Schwarzengrund at the Everson facility. Since the source has not yet been identified at the Everson Facility, Mars Petcare US does not plan to resume production based on their commitment to the safety of their pet owners, and their pets, and others concerned.
Only the products produced at the Everson facility have been impacted by the voluntary recall. The company assures the safety of the products produced at other Mars Petcare US facilities.
Mars Petcare US is working with retail customers to ensure that the recalled products are removed from store shelves. These products should not be sold, or fed to pets. If consumers believe they have purchased pet food affected by this voluntary recall, they should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
