Top 10 Most Common Pet Wounds

This year, Magic managed to slice open the top of his forepaw. The nasty cut from who-knows-what (probably tackling his ball in rough terrain) resulted in stitches, a bandage and antibiotics, with a $200+ veterinary bill.

Two years ago, during a bout of insomnia, I decided in the middle of the night to run upstairs to my office to work. And startled the cat. Seren leaped off the guest bed, caught her claw, and ripped it off. Ouch! For that, first aid (clipping close, and Epsom salt soaks) healed the trauma.

And last year, Magic had a run in with some sort of stinging buggy creature that turned him into a checkerboard dog with a huge swollen hippo face. Ooooh, did he itch. Benadryl and cold water soaks did the job for him but it took three days.

So imagine my surprise when Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI, www.petinsurance.com ) recently sent me a list of the top ten pet wounds. Lacerations (or bites) came in #1 with more than 11,000 claims! Torn nail is #2 and insect bites #3. Gee, guess it’s nice to know my fur-kids are “normal.” Here’s the list:

Top Pet Wounds
1. Lacerations/Bite Wounds
2. Torn Nail
3. Insect Bites and Stings
4. Abrasion
5. Eye Trauma
6. Puncture
7. Foreign Object in Skin
8. Foreign Object in Ear
9. Foreign Object in Foot
10. Snakebite

So what kinds of mishaps have your pets suffered? Maybe they’ve been lucky with no accidents. Do you have pet insurance? Or do you set aside a pet emergency fund?
